I alluded to this Specimen Straight Grain a few days ago. I thought it might get close to $200, even with the disclosed issue.

Hopefully that stem bit isn't as lacking in material as it appears in the pictures.

This 8-Dot Danzey did a lot better than I would have guessed. The stem is rounded a nomenclature also buffed (but legible).

That seems like a crazy price, but the bid history appears to be honest.

Why did it go for so much?

Why did it go for so much?
Simple. There were three competing bidders, who got into a minor bidding war. Why did they get into a bidding war? They all wanted that pipe, dings, wear, and all. The Danzey is a popular Sasieni model, it's a pre WW2 8 Dot, it has outstanding birdseye grain covering most of it, rare for a Sasieni, so collectors are willing to pop more for it.

Maybe they all had money burning in their pockets from having exited positions to make use of tax harvesting opportunities. Who knows? The next one could go for a lot more or a lot less.

Here’s a different theory. The hammer fell at 645pm west coast time. Depending on where the bidders were located if American they could have easily been under the influence of preprandial or postprandial libations, or if in Asia suffering from a hangover.

Sounds crazy, but WELL within the realm of "mine is bigger than yours" behavior.

Indeed, a clip is making the rounds of an alcohol-fueled guy holding a firecracker in his eye (via squinting) and setting it off to prove he's the Manliest Man The World Has Ever Known.

AI videos can handle that scenario easily. I had a friend tell me about all these people who were planting packages with paint bombs on their porch. So I went to an AI program and created a similar video in about ten seconds.
