I ran across this article today. Found it quite entertaining. You may have seen it before. It’s from 2020. Dr. Hanna has led one interesting life.

A wonderful article about my friend and fellow Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club member. Indeed, an interesting and very funny guy. We've shared many a bowl together.
It is a fine article and I love his book.

On another topic, and I ask since you’re a member of the CPCC, I assume there is no Chicago show this year. I have seen no notice of the event.

What most people don't know is Fred Hanna was both the behavioral and physical likeness inspiration for Fred Flintstone, the founding character of Hanna-Barbera cartoon production company fame.

In addition to naming the character and company after him, the association paid massive royalties for many decades, which put him in the same class as Jeff Bezo$ and Bill Gate$ when it comes to wealth. Money that he has spent (to date, anyway) almost exclusively on straight grain pipes.

The things you learn on the Internet, eh?

Fred just emailed me. Said he called both Bezos and Gates to see if they were the ones who had "outed" his backstory to me.

Their response was (in meaning, if not in words), "You actually think that WE think about YOU?" That anyone whose billions can still be counted in single digits doesn't rate such consideration in their circles.

True. Ask him yourself. Fred never lies or BS's about anything.

OK.

Fred has been following this thread and asked me to make sure everyone understands that while he was, in fact, the inspiration for Fred Flintstone, that he doesn't wear fur, and didn't specify that Wilma be a redhead.

He always thought Betty Rubble was the hot one, you see. The brunette.

And Dino, the "adorable" family pet, was actually rather nasty off camera, so his "affection" for the critter was, well, just acting.

Let's see... what else... Oh yes: While he has absolutely spent billions on straightgrains, it hasn't been the majority of his fortune but only about a third of it. Only the three billion he made from his book "The Perfect Smoke" has been spent on pipes.

My apologies for any confusion regarding the above. I'll try to be more conscientious about details in the future.

Thanks for sharing that great article, I’m going to have to read this book. As new pipe smoker and woodworker, I’ve questioned the smoke ability of pipes because of the briar, even in these forums. You read in these forums people talking about these great smokes with cheap pipes. I love that he points that out lol. Obviously, holes need to be drilled right but, I think it’s the luck of the draw or briar in this case.

Dammit! Having been the model for the "family pet" I'm devastated that Fred was fakin' it! And, more painfully, I've been telling everyone how terrific Wilderness is.
He's a much better actor than I ever gave him credit for.
Thanks, George, for crushing my illusions.
