Have a fairly long move coming up and was thinking of a way to throw some tobacco in the cab of the moving truck so I can enjoy a pipe in the evenings. Pouches sound like the dry out a little quicker than I would like. Has anyone tried a Pelican case to store for longer than 2 days? With the air tight seal I was thinking the tobacco would stay moist a lot longer than just in a pouch. I know ziploc bags work, but I wanted something a little more durable in case I drop it, step on it, etc. Get the foam in it and you can cut it to fit your favorite pipe and accessories. They do use them as travel humidors for the cigar crowd.
Pelican 1010 This is the smallest, but I doubt a pipe would fit. The 1030 would fit most pipes.
Thanks guys and gals.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Just keep it out of the sun so the moisture in the tobacco doesn't condense in the container.

Neat case. And not knowing how long you're going to be on the road, but a tobacco pouch is quite adequate for a couple of days.
At least it's always been for me.

Those pelican cases are great for pipes, since they are waterproof, float, very sturdy and customizable foam padding on the inside. But I think this is too much for holding tobacco. I would just put them in zip locks and call it a day. If you really wanted, you can double bag them.

I am looking at getting a Pelican 1010 case for longer term storage. I spend 3 weeks out on the rig, and I cannot bring a glass jar in my duffel. The 1010 is big enough for a baggie or two, totalling 4 oz, and is reasonable at $23.00.

I travel with 4 or 5 of the snack size ziplocks with different blends, and they will stay fresh/moist easy a week. When they need a refill I transfer some out of the mason jars.

That's what I was thinking. But, with wife and both boys riding with me, I may be limited on when/how often I can light up. May have to order some snuff instead. Original plan was they would go on ahead in a rental car and I would follow.

I use a large leather wallet/billfold and a vinyl zippered pouch that was some sort of purse or wallet. Picked them both up at Salvation Army for 99 cents each. The large wallet/billfold is brown tri-fold leather with nice looking leaves stamped in the leather. I modified it a bit and it holds 1 oz in 3 separate pockets for a total of 3 oz of different baccy. I use the snack size zip locks which perfectly in the pockets. The smaller vinyl unit was unused and can hold about 2 oz with no ziplock needed. I like to repurpose/re-use/recycle/tinker and this method fits the bill for me. Good luck with the Pelican tho!!

I use those humidity discs all the time. I have one in every mason jar of tobacco I have.

Never had any problems. Just make sure you soak them in distilled water, not tap water.

For 99 cents each...They're a great deal.

I've used them for tobacco storage on two week trips in the Boundary Waters. They worked exceptionally well.

I'm all about repurposing stuff, I recently picked up a pill shaed semi hard umbrella case that zips around for $1, it makes a perfect one pipe case with room for baccy, pipe tool, and lighter.

I have a one pipe Castleford pouch($20) with a zipper. Works fine for a few days or a week. Beyond that I can use a zip lock for my back up on a trip. To tell you the truth, the made for pipe and tobacco in the first place style....Is pretty kick ass.

Wow, I never thought about using a Pelican case. That is exactly what I will use on vacation and would be perfect too for taking through airports.

Otterbox make great containers. Water and crush proof
Found this review on the small Otterbox:
"I wish this little case hadn't broken. When it worked, it was excellent - the gasket sealed it to the elements perfectly, keeping contents safe, secure and environment protected.

I kept this case in a soft, sporting gear bag to hold small spare parts such as machine screws, bolts, hex wrenches and springs.

Used for just over a year (how's that for "just when the warranty expires?) the small "lip" the latch catches broke off. The result is a case that doesn't stay closed and I can no longer trust to protect the contents.

Inspecting the piece that broke off, it was only attached by a sliver of plastic. I'd call that a fundamental design flaw: making the highest stress part of the case the weakest.

Cons: Not durable, design flaw, breaks just out of warranty in light use"
But they do state that they have a lifetime warranty, so you would just need to find a stable place that sells them that would be easy to take back the product to, IF it fails

Well, I placed an order through Pelican-Case.com site and ordered the 1050 case in blue, which I will also have the pluck type foam insert so that I can put my pipe in.

Then I ordered two of the 1010 small cases for 2 different tobaccos to take on vacation with me.

Life is good now. The forum came through.....again.
