Really? C'mon that's like the whole point! Of course some aren't, but they're usually marked "Calabash" or calabash style or what have you. Regardless they're just not the same.

The American Calabash (briar) about 45 minutes to an hour.

The other two are so wide I believe it detracts from the time, I'd say about 30 minutes in the two gourds.

They are an odd but enjoyable smoke. I had one that smoked so cool, it was like puffing dust.

I have a Pioneer that's about 35 years old. Need to get that one back in the rotation.

Right now I have three smokable calabashes One really should have the bowl replaced as it has been broken and glued. Can't complain for the price though . It was in a batch that I gave around 20 bucks for. The fourth one is in definite need of a new bowl. I'll get to that sooner or later.

I thought that in order to be called a "calabash" pipe they had to be made from a real gourd.

I thought that as well.

My American Smoking Pipe Co. "Calabash" (Mark Tinsky)is simply named that.

I suppose it was named so because of the shape... and it is taller than a typical full bent.
