Been selling pipes on ebay and saw this pass by. It was bidding at ten bucks, but the grain looked pretty solid with some cool birdseye. I bid 20 and ended up getting it for $18. I have scoured the internet mercilessly, been to pipedia, pipehil, and all the usual steadfast sources, but all I can find about John Aylesbury pipes and/or their quality/history is quite vague. Basically they were made at various times, range widely in quality, and have been made by several different makers. Having some real trouble identifying anything about this pipe.

Does anyone have the faintest clue where to find any more info on who may have produced this pipe, or know anything about Ayslesbury pipes yourself? All I know is that it was made in France. John Aylesbury on one side of the shank, "863 Nelson" on the other. Stem has logo, and simply "France" on it.

Thanks!

Dug a little deeper. Most of their pipes are marked as being made in Denmark, Germany, or France. I have to believe their "notable European makers" would have been Stanwell (before they moved), Vauen, and........I guessed Chacom. Looked up Chacom with the same shape number and a Chacom 863 looks quite similar. I'm leaning towards this having been made by Chacom.

This pipe must have been from before it became German owned? I think the JA name has bounced around quite a bit. I don’t think he’s a real person lol
He's not, it's a made up name for a conglomerate that has been around since the 70s. The marketed Peterson, Big Ben, Bentley, Brebbia, and others in their day. Own some cigar lines as well. From what I've read it's always been a German company. Founded in Germany anyway.
