The owner of our local Indian restaurant said it was created by the Chinese that came over to work in the leather industry since the Indians couldn't. They wanted to replicate some of their chinese dishes but had to use the Indian ingredients and boom - gobi manchurian.

That's what he says anyway - and he's from India. So take that with some salt or not...

Yes, in Calcutta, no?

Edit: I looked it up, apparently it was invented in Mumbai, not Calcutta. Calcutta does have a lot of intersting Indian/Chinese "fusion" dishes.

It’s so good and incredible variety, like you’d expect. I’ve liked every thing I’ve ever tried. The worst case is the “interesting but won’t have that again” category. One of those was pickled curried limes. I didn’t know what they were. A bit of an odd combination of flavors.

We’ve been fortunate to occasionally have Indian friends have us over for dinner. Even very simple dishes put to shame most restaurants. I watch the food being prepared and write down the recipes but it’s never the same. Now I’m hungry.
