mrnovember, I would avoid smoking wet aromatics- especially in the beginning.
I still don't understand why people think aromatics are for beginners. I agree with smoky, as I'm certainly a proficient pipe smoker yet many aromatics require all of my acquired skills just to enjoy a simple pipe. Conversely a mild English like Early Morning Pipe or a smooth bowl of Irish Oak (Va/Per/bur) is much easier to smoke for a newby.
But hey, I'm just speaking from my own personal experience.

I agree with many of the suggestions here. Try a lane 1Q (or your friendly bulk blend equivalent) or Early Morning Pipe for an easy light and burn. Have some water. The biggest thing that helped me was to slow down. Once I got to the point that I was not trying to finish a pipe in 20 minutes the bite went away. If I don't have a lot of time for a smoke I will either pick a small bowl or only pack the bottom half.

Agreed with Dottiewarden on Early Morning and Irish Oak, especially the latter. I've seen Oak billed as a blend for the experienced, but as one who has smoked steadily for only 2 years I find this blend much easier to enjoy than straight VA's VA Pers, or anything else. Also, it's more versatile through the humid American seasons than English or Lat bombs.

As always My suggestion alongside with proper technique is to go and buy some Prince Albert or Carter Hall, these and Lane Limited or Sutilff Edgeworth sems me very easy to control and wont require too much attention while smoking

Be honest with the fella. You all burnt off your tongues ability to feel tongue bite a long time ago and he is just gonna have to fight through it until he has broken his tongue too. Lolz.

+1 for Carter Hall and corn cob pipes. CH and cobs are my go-to on the weekend if I'm doing some outdoor drinking / grilling out / etc.
The great thing about CH is that it will smoke pretty well even if you pack it too loose, too tight, or puff too fast (and it doesn't bite very hard, if at all). Even though CH smokes well pretty much no matter what, once you get the right combo of packing and puffing tempo, you'll know it. You'll get a cool, tasty sweet and nutty burley smoke.
You've got a cob, now get some Carter Hall and puff away :puffpipe:
