As I've mentioned in a previous posts, I'm a new pipe smoker, but I've actually really enjoyed Presbyterian mixture. However, I've been noticing some inconsistency in the tins. I know there are seasonal blending changes, but sometimes it can be super sweet and delicious and other times flatter is it just me or have other people noticed inconsistency between the cans of Presbyterian mixture? Love to hear your thoughts.

Couple thoughts:

First, you had mentioned a week or so ago that you were dealing with some health issues that impacted your taste and smell. Maybe that is still affecting you.

Second, it’s possible you have had tins that had different age on them. That might have changed the profile.

Third, it might just be how the tobacco was blended at the time it was packaged but who knows. While Presbyterian Muxture isn’t a fav of mine, many other people do enjoy it so keep on trying with it :)

Have you, by any chance, purchased tins that were produced for different markets? Are you smoking a tin that was produced for the Germans and then comparing it to the ones sold in the United States for example?

Sometimes tobacco just does that. My favorite smoke is Pegasus and I've gotten different smokes out of the same batch and same pipe. Usually I didn't pack it right, was smoking too fast, or it was something about the weather. Accounting for technique and conditions can help too.

Good advice. I have slowed down my pipe smoking cadence and trying different packing techniques too.

I have been smoking a tin from 2022.
Ok, but are you comparing it with when you say that you have found inconsistency in the tins? The recipe changed around 2020 for the german tins.
As said above, smoking it in a different pipe might also affect your smoke, as could the weather, first of second smoke of the day,…. Even the very same bowl could taste different from one day to another.

Thanks for replying, everyone...I have been smoking a 2022 US tin compared to a recent 2024 tin, and the tobacco appears less sweet. It may just be my palette, flu recovery or pipe, but I wanted to know more from others who may or may not have had this issue. It's been a new pipe learning journey, and I am interested in changing blends over time or seasoning leaf purchases by blenders. It helps to know it might be me rather than the blends.

Trying is learning. If you smoke another 2024 tin and you like it, you will know that this one is not to cellar for you
