Check out the forum's B&M list. Build a relationship with them and eventually they'll let you in on Esoterica drops. Those bags often sit on shelves long enough to collect dust while the shop's regular customers buy up cigars and house blends.
Thanks for the tip. That really drives home how different the people who only buy online are from the people who only buy from B&Ms, no way the guys shelling out a few hundreds for a bag or even tin would think to just hit up B&Ms.

I'd always wondered why the regular Germain stuff doesn't seem particularly sought after or hard to get if they're the ones who make Esoterica, but a shipping delay years ago certainly explains it. It's like how the Andalusian Bull won Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year like ten years ago and they still sell out quickly online, in my experience they stick around a bit longer in B&Ms.

This is a tough one. I do really appreciate a good brick & mortar retailer. And I'm happy and willing to pay for the privilege of using their premises; within reason. But they've got to offer value, too.

Unfortunately, stores specializing in strictly tobacco products are going to struggle to make ends meet and are going to need to raise prices to cover their overhead. Such stores are best advised to broaden their offerings I would think (although I am certainly not qualified to say). Cigars and pipes are just too narrow a market to allow for really successful brick and mortar retail.

Exactly, it's a wise strategy to find things that will bring non smokers in for something other than a gift for smokers. Cargo Hold in Poulsbo, WA has nailed this, two thirds of their merchandise probably isn't smoking related. I first went in there thinking it was just another touristy shop then I saw the pipes and tobacco and that planted the inkling in me to try pipe smoking.

I supported our local B&M this Christmas....well my wife did (she surprised me saying she wold buy me a tin for Christmas)......it only cost US$109 for a tin of Peterson!

Granted, the B&M is not a rip off....it's the tax that's the issue. I'm happy enough to buy the odd bit off them, in appreciation for the fact that they are actually there and supplying pipe smokers down here.

Yeah I'll admit part of why I wasn't fazed by $50 for Esoterica tins is because here in Washington Plum Pudding costs $45 a tin. $109 is just insane, mad respect to all the B&Ms in Australia and NZ refusing to let the nanny state win with those highway robbery rates.

The majority of my tobacco purchases have been B&M shopping in person at Watch City Cigars. Their prices seem fair and they've treated me well, offering good suggestions. If that wasn't the case, I probably would've bought from them once and then started shopping online more regularly than I do now. I'm all for supporting B&Ms, as long as they offer what I value.

Living in the Columbus, Ohio metro area we have it better then most. Governors is an old large house with multiple rooms, front porch and fire pit and bbq area out back. Same owner has other locations around the area. Tinder Box Easton(very high end shopping area) next to an Irish Pub that has dedicated some of their patio area for smokers. and at least another dozen+ different shops around the area. I've have on occasion stopped by Premal's shop just to shoot the breeze (no retail). I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off at any off these places.

Watch City is very well regarded especially for their house blends. Hopefully they can continue to make those without Sutliff.

Wow I might have to visit Columbus some time. My great grandpa was from Cleveland, haven't been to Ohio since his funeral 20 years ago.

In order to justify higher prices, a B&M needs to offer an experience worth that extra cost, such as expert advice to help the customer--something you can't get (easily) when shopping online.

The only store within a reasonable distance for me has a small rack of pipe tobacco at high prices, but there's also a smoking lounge in the back: some day I'll drive down there, buy an overpriced tin, and spend the afternoon with the locals (the owners are some interesting guys).

On the other hand, the local vape shop with the dripping humidor, and pot pipes they try to sell as briar, will never see my face. They already make plenty from the local potheads.

But yeah, most of the time I'm going to shop online for my pipe tobacco: vastly larger selection, much lower prices.
I have to agree. If you want to run a B&M, for ANYTHING, and you need to command higher prices to cover additional overhead, taxes, payroll, etc., the reality is you have to offer something more than a cash register.

I mentioned in another post about a new Cigar and Pipe lounge in Woodland Park, CO. They have been open about 18 months. The owner, Jake, is at the shop most times it is open. He is a youger guy (in terms of smokers, I think), maybe late 30s or early 40s. But he is very knowledgeable.

Their niche is really their lounge setup. It is a small place, maybe 1100 square feet, two story. The downstairs has their humidor, which they are trying hard to build up, along with a "bar" and TV for watching various sporting events and movies. They cannot "sell" liquor, as they don't have a license, but they can allow you to leave a bottle of your own behind the bar, which they can serve to you. It is a very cool set up. Downstairs is the "Rowdy Area". Upstairs, is the "Quiet Area" where you sit and chat quietly, maybe play a game of chess or cards while you smoke.

They also provide 2 colors of ash trays, black and red. If you are using a black ashtray, then you are telling the room you are open for random conversation. If you are using a red ashtray, you are telling the room you would prefer to be left alone to enjoy your smoke.

The establishment does not allow any cigarettes or weed. It is also a "members only" club, and you have to sit for a "trial" before you can join. The trialnis free, and basically consists of you coming in and sitting with group of guys for an hour or two, smoking and maybe having a drink, and making conversation. Once you prove you are not a general moron (or at least not a general A-hole), then you have passed your trial and you are allowed to select your level of membership. $50 t mos gets you unlimited access to the club and a spot behind the bar for a bottle or two, as well as 15% off anything in the humidor (which seemed reasonably priced to me). You can also bring a "guest" but they have to spend at least $15 in the humidor each visit. I have the $75 / mos plan, which gives me all of that, plus a permanent guest pass for up to 3 quests, with no purchase requirement and "priority seating" for your guests (due to the size of the space, the have a fairly low occupancy limit).

Anyway, I loved the concept, so I joined. A couple of weeks ago, after going into town for Holiday shopping with my Wife and Step Daughter, the girls wanted to keep shopping and I didn't. So I just ran over to the T&B and had a couple of smokes and a glass of my bourbon while they shopped. While I was there, I met a guy who offered me a pour from his bottle, an 18 yo Scotch. Which I graciously accepted.

In my mind, this is the type of B&M experience that is worth supporting over online prices.

They will continue making blends but have said some will likely go away. I imagine that'll leave room for some new creations from them though.

I love my B&M! The Tinder Box at Karric Square in Columbus, Ohio is fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, pipe centered, and they even have a nice smoking lounge, grandfathered due to time in the location. I can’t get all my favorite blends there, but the ones I can, I buy there. Factoring in shipping from online shops, they are pretty comparable on prices. One of the lucky ones, I guess. There is another Tinder Box in Columbus, but they are very cigar-centric.

I love the TinderBox at Easton, near Columbus. Admittedly it’s largely a cigar store, but they do carry a few tins. I love smoking a pipe and eating breakfast at the adjacent pipe-friendly outdoor restaurant. The second area Tinder Box at 5911 Karric Square Drive, Columbus, OH 43016 has a fantastic pipe selection and indoor smoking lounge. I picked up a beautiful Ardor Urano there this summer.

Aren’t they in Massachusetts? I thought they were banning all flavored products this year.
Sales of flavored tobacco has been banned in Massachusetts for years, I believe it went into effect in 2020. You can still buy some pretty standard aromatics even in a convenience store, but if it's blatantly packaged as something like cherry Pipe tobacco it's a no go. On the Watch City Cigar site it'll even say (in red) cannot ship to or no sales to Massachusetts for certain blends. I think all Massachusetts did was lose tax revenue because you can easily buy it nearby in several other New England states, and that's what some folks do.

Yeah I've seen a fair amount of people say that Columbus is a great place for B&Ms
