It's all relative. I've owned many of the brands pictured in the book and a lot of those brands show up here daily. Never owned a Falcon though many look promising. Although I've got a cob, I won't buy from Missouri Meerschaum.
I do think there's a little bit of a misconception that people don't smoke expensive pipes. While I'm sure there's some truth to that and a collector base, there's still a lot of people who both own expensive pipes and smoking them regularly. There's no reason anyone can't treat a $1,000 pipe as a workhorse any differently than a cob. They can all be workhorses.

Rick got most of his pipes before the Great Danes got famous and their prices went through the roof, and he only has about 300 pipes in this collection. He could pay the out-of-sight prices they are selling for now he rarely had to.
Every pipe he has he smokes.
The book is definitely a great read and is throughly enjoyable.

I enjoyed the book, took it away off-shore last month. He sure does like the Danish pipes. However, he does include many top artisans from around the world too.
There's other chapters in the book, where he writes about cleaning/repairing pipes and of course modifying the drilling of pipes, as mentioned earlier in the thread.
I also enjoyed the clips Brian Levine played of him, reading from the book too, I believe Rick's son was interviewing him.
A really nice guy, from all accounts.

An enjoyable pass time. A simple pleasure. No sense making it any more complicated.

Although….

PAD and TAD are well “forum” documented disorders, closely followed by..

Tamper Aquisition Disorder
Lighter Aquisition Disorder
Stem chewing
Cob licking

Next comes the sporting of white socks and sandals.

Later followed by Lawn Assaults.

Arrest and/or institutionalization.

A shameful and pointless downward spiral —as smoking is banned in most institutions.

Keep it simple.
Wait……… Cob licking??

I've read both volumes multiple times. I really the books for what they are. I aspire to have a high end collection someday like Rick and others here. He's got a great attention to detail and gives great descriptions on his interactions with pipe carvers and collectors. There are also some good tips for collectors in there.
If your not into high end pipes or collecting pipes, there's not much for you. Bur if you are into that aspect of the hobby, I dare say it's a must read.
