Hot water rinse works well with meerschaum also...
When I’ve restored severely damaged meers that required a fair amount of material removal I used a brief soak in water to soften the meerschaum and make it more workable.

Be careful not to get the stummel too wet, it doesn’t take long to make it very soft, especially on the surface.

I have some artisan pipes that are very hard to break down for cleaning. I don't want to have to put them in the fridge every time I smoke them to make it easier to remove the stem and I'm afraid I'll snap the hand-made stems if I try to separate them from the shank at room temperature. I've taken to running warm water through them, drying them thoroughly, then feeding a pipe cleaner from the bit into the bowl and using needle nose pliers to pull the pipe cleaner out through bowl. Works well.

I’m glad this thread didn’t turn into a raging dumpster fire, that wasn’t my intent.

Next week we can discuss why straight grain pipes smoke cooler than non-straight grain pipes.
Duh, because running water with the grain is more efficient than running water across the grain and allows the cooling properties to assimilate into the briar, assuming the water is 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temp should always be at 109 degrees Fahrenheit, NEVER higher.

Not sure what crackpot told you 110, but I feel sorry for ya.

I think as a forum we are just becoming more mature
I think in the past, it was Saltedplug that was the loudest voice of dissent, but I think it was mostly in fun, but it to the casual observer that wasn't aware of Salt's propensity to take things too far, it looked like a serious objection.

And, as usual, people took him seriously, or developed the outlook his was a strong opinion.

Reminds me of summer camp, when I would sneak out of the tent at night, fill a bucket with warm water, and slip some schnook's hand into it. Makes them wet their sleeping bag. Works like a charm. Boy, was I a little bastard back then!
Jesse, we did that shit to at summer camp as well. Our best move was on a movie night we snuck out and then we took a bunch of the cabin doors and set them afloat in canoes . That pissed the counselors and owners off to a whole new level. We would also steal packs of cigarettes from the cooks and anyone else who smoked them. We were always looking for a way to piss people off. We were totally juvenile delinquents. I got sent off to boarding school at 15 because I was driving my parents insane. Little did they know how I ran that school.
