Mixture 79 was a favorite of the late Hugh Hefner. Perhaps its aroma attracted all those nubile, young women (or maybe it was simply his money and the 15-minutes of fame he offered). To my nose, however, the only thing that aroma would attract are grandmothers and their moms, for it reeks like an old-lady's perfume!

I like it a lot, but I used to cut it with Mac B's Golden Extra, because the flavoring of Mix 79 was way over the top. It no longer is, in my opinion. I can easily smoke it straight. Ditto for the last years of Middleton's Cherry, Kentucky Club Mixture, and Half&Half, all of which were obnoxiously flavored or scented at one time. The old Bond Street tasted like pure soap to me. It wasn't the scent, actually, but its potency, like wearing too much cologne. Everybody except the smoker used to bitch about it.

But I like it. It has a wonderful bowl aroma, unlike many "superior" blends. I'm buying it by the tub. Wish I'd done the same for the Cherry, KC Mixture, and Walnut. (They used to sell these Anywhere,USA.)

I used to buy the tubs but the last few years I bought the Sutliff #600 which is the bulk version. I moved on to Country Squire's blends and Gawith Hoggarth Flakes but I still smoke a few bowls of M79 a week. When this Sutliff and MacBaren atrocity happened I bought two pounds to stow away in my cellar. Such a shame that one of the first aromatic pipe tobaccos in the U.S. is just a memory now. I might even cut it with some of the many tubs of Prince Albert I have to just make it stretch a little longer.

When I first started smoking pipes Mixture 79 was the butt of M A N Y jokes so I never even contemplated it. I didn't try it until last fall. I managed to get a couple pounds before the tobaccacalypse, but wish I had more. I really enjoy it.

Mixture 79 didnt exude the same pheromones when I smoked it ☹️

Must have been his money.
And the offer of “free room and board” in his mansion 🤔

Me too brother. I bought a few pounds as well. I'm really contemplating on buying two more pounds. Along as they are in Mason Jars and sealed correctly it can stay good almost indefinitely. I'm a HUGE Cowboy Coffee fan too. I have about three pounds of that in my cellar as well.

It’s one of a kind and I don’t get perfume from it. I stocked up on the big tubs and I’m wondering if they hold up over time, does anyone have experience with aged tubs?

I've been smoking it for the past several weeks. The first bowl was overpowering, but I think that the toppings had unevenly applied because subsequent bowls are nothing like that first one, and also a bit different one to the next.

It's a weirdly pleasant blend, not the horror story that's been presented here. But, it's nothing I'm going to buy more of, either.
