From Plough Publishing, excerpted:
Like my pint, my pipe carries with it a whole penumbra of literary and personal associations, and smoking it always means that I am relaxing my tensions, letting go of my stresses, savoring life and the present moment in all its fullness. Given my high blood pressure and the general stresses of life, even my doctor might concede that this genial relaxation, this easing and letting go of tensions, is just the thing I need.

Read all about it here.

And here is me thinking that a “penumbra” was a female-specific anatomical term. I do sure appreciate a nice draught pint, but it’s rare to get the pipe combination unless there is outside seating where smoking is permitted.
That's right, he's harking back to ye olden days a bit there - the only place to have a pint and a pipe at the inn is out, nowadays. You can't mix iPhones and indoor smoking, Malcolm, 3 points on your poetic licence.

Malcolm is a real man. Ph.D. in Medieval literature and an ordained Anglican priest. And beer, whiskey, and pipes on the side.

Long-time fan. A lot in common despite some mildly irksome differences. My wife got me some of his poetry this past Christmas. This is an endearing little piece very much in the idiom of mid-20th century Brits who straddled an older sentiment on the one hand with the Academy on the other.
