Improvised Tamper

You can always use a ball point pen that has been retracted. The non ink side can be used as a tamper and the ink side could be used as a scoop to remove ashes and tobacco.

Some great ideas here. I have pipe cases for most of my pipes and had purchased a box of horse shoe nails. They work really well both as tampers and the sharp end for digging and poking. I keep one in every case.

At the range it almost always a .45 cartridge, bullet end.
If the bowl is smoked down enough to provide some insulating ash, then a fingertip works.

I frequently use my finger, or a golf tee , or a key....mostly my finger.

A chapstick will do the trick, if the bore of the chamber is large enough.
