ok i get paid thursday so im gonna go to a pipe shop. its a bit of a drive but it should be worth it. the owner is a six time slow smoking champion(i dont know if thats just for america or for the world) so the store should be good. the only tobacco stores around me are cigarette and cigar focused, the only pipe tobacco they have are captain black, paladin and other brands like that. im gonna get myself a nice pipe and some good tobacco. now the only tobacco ive bought is captain black royal and paladin black cherry. any one have any suggestions as to what i should get?

Tell the owner what you like and where you think you want to head. Let him make some suggestions. There are a lot of choices out there and I'm sure he can get you well set up. Good luck and have a lot of fun. Don't hurry the process. Its all about discovering new things.

My suggestion would be to talk with the guys in the shop as to what your tastes are. They will be able to suggest some blends to get you started, tinned or bulk. Also, you can look at luxurytobaccoreviews.com for some insight into some of the blends. Pay attention to reviews here on site.
Other than that, get ready for the dump of just about every blend possible that people think you should try.

All desireable pipe styles.
You've got the whole world of pipe tobacco ahead of you. It'll be a fantastic voyage of discovery.

As a new pipe smoker who has only tried 3 pipe tobaccos so far. Captain Black, a blend from the local shop( I did not like) and Mac Baren 7 seas Royal blend. I like the Mac Baren very much, Captain black is just OK but I will keep smoking it. The price difference was only like $4 but the quality of the Mac Baren is obvious even for a newbie like myself. It smells like dates, vanilla and rum!
I have two pipes, one is a dublin style bowl(small) with a straight stem that is 7 inches long. The other is about 5 inches long has a larger bowl and a bent stem. Both were around $30 and say "Italy" on them. Not fancy but the bent stem is my favorite. Dont forget the pipe cleaners!

Have fun. Most shops will let you try some of their tobacco so take advantage of that. I will also echo others that say listen to the owner. My local B@M shop keep is the reason I still smoke pipes.

And don't get anything with latakia in it  . Horns are very nice looking pipes, but a bit difficult to smoke.

It'll be worth the trip. I am sure they will be very helpful in pointing you to some great blends and pipes. Keep an open mind as to what you want to try. I am sure they will offer you some samples to give a go.

A shop in Baton Rouge keeps a bunch of little corncobs on hand that they give customers to try out different blends with. Might not hurt to buy a cob to do your sampling with, that way you won't stink up a good pipe by accident.
