Another good place to visit for tobacco blends:

Pipeworks & Wilke
Carole Burns is both the proprietor and a master blender. The store was started in NYC in 1885 and she now operates it out of Vermont. I can vouch for the fact that she makes some of the best non-commercial aromatic blends.
You can get a sampler pack of 8 ounces divided up however you like - 2 oz. each of 4 blends might be a good start. She makes other blends besides aromatics too.
She will spend time with you to determine what may suit you best, then make suggestions.
Welcome to the land of Puffington, where we are a generalyy a happy and helpful bunch!

I did not buy my first pipe, a Navy nurse did, I was laid up and asked her to go to the Geedunk, PX for you ground pounders, she came back with a Bent Kaywoodie and a pack of Borkum- Riff, would sneak off at night and smoke in the Janitors closet. It was heaven , clean sheets, good food, could sleep all I wanted. I still have that pipe and it only smokes good when I lock myself in a closet. Carter Hall and cobs, get a bag from MM, you have some pipes to experiment with different tobbacos without breaking the bank, You will learn its slow and steady, all the help you need is here, Good to have you young man.

+1 on the Captain Black. It gets a lot of grief because its so heavily cased, which is true. But its a great smoke for we Aro lovers. There is a reason its one of the best selling pipe tobaccos. My suggestion is to get a small amount of everything you can afford and give it a try. You may find your tastes gravitating to one thing or another. Then do this again in a few months because your tastes may change again, though mine havent in about 10 months of smoking.

welcome to the forum family! And I would also suggest carter hall for the first blend... I am not a huge fan of captain black but it does have a great room note... Let us know how you like it!

Welcome aboard.

PA Soft Vanilla is pretty decent for an inexpensive aromatic. You could do far worse.

Be patient - the learning curve can be steep. And enjoy. :puffy:

I will be picking up carter hall after work to try. The prince albert soft vanilla was a great start I really enjoyed it. I think my first buy online will be Peterson Pipe Tobacco Selection it includes one 50g each of Peterson Sherlock Holmes, Old Dublin, Sunset Breeze, Sweet Killarney and Irish Oak in gift box.

Sweet Killarney is pretty good, I've just cracked a tin of that and Connoisseur's Choice - on the latter I suggest letting it dry a bit - pack a bowl and let it sit for half a day depending. I'd also suggest Mac Baren's 7 Seas line - to me its fairly similar to Peterson line.

Yeah I couldn't figure out how to make it a clickable link. I bought the Mac Baren's 7 Seas Gold and the Peterson Pipe Tobacco Selection online. Thanks rothnh, I thought the Peterson sampler would give me a head start in trying different blends. Ill have to look into the Pipeworks & Wilke sampler. :puffpipe:

seitz - welcome - you are at the beginning of a very fun journey. One way to learn more about tobaccos is to go visit Uhle's in downtown Milwaukee. They are friendly and very knowledgable. They have been blending for many decades and you can sample bowls from their many jars.

I highly suggest Pipes & Cigars They are running a special on there in house brand Home & Hearth. Buy 2 get 1 free on tins and Bulk Ounces.
I have picked up a few varieties along with a cob here and there. For less than 15 I got 3 ounces and a new cob shipped.
Also if you go the local only route, give Half & Half a shot. Its a light Aromatic thats easy to smoke and blends well with the blends you find to strong.
