I searched but could not find the meaning on “Engine Turned”? Is it a flame adjustment, or something else? Thanks in advance!

Engine turned is a name for particular finishes on metal surfaces. It refers to the fact that they are carved (turned) by a machine (engine). They are usually elaborate geometric designs that would be hard to do by hand.

I can’t see from the pics if that black lighter has a carved pattern.
Thanks! I enlarged the pics, and the “Engine Turned” has a texture finish w/vertical lines, and the other has a smooth finish.

That’s my favorite lighter. The “engine turned” one. I’ve got a couple of them. Has a great feel in the hand.

I have a Corona old boy with the herringbone pattern.
I intend to buy another one with the briarshell finish when I've done stocking up my cellar, and bought myself another Ashton pipe.

Casual got it exactly right about the engine turning. I have loads of pocket watches with engine turning from the late 19th century and early 20th.
