I can still remember the pretty school teacher coming and my mother and her struggling to carry those heavy boxes containing the 1963 World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft Series and Unabridged Dictionaries wearing skirts and high heels up the sidewalk.

I was four and a half years old.

They had me open all the boxes.

I took each book out, and taught me how to open new books without damaging the spine. I sat there on the floor and opened every one, they way they taught me.

In that little ranch home that still stands today a half mile South of Bug Tussle, there are custom book shelves my mother insisted be placed there in the summer of 1954 when my father built it for her.

Those two school teachers, brought me a stool and I arranged them in alphabetical order, starting at the top, in those book shelves built before I was born.

My father came in from the fields and saw me with all those new World books and empty boxes and he started crying, the first time I’d ever seen him cry.

He blurted out, Oh my God, what do I owe you for those books, and the two women laughed and the pretty school teacher said Bruce, take your son into the kitchen and show him how to sign a check on his bank account to me for $20 which is a down payment on $200. There will be a dozen more payments of $15 he will mail each month to the World Publishing Company.

I discovered what the current truth was in the fall of 1962, that day, when the brand new 1963 World Books came in.

I’ve been digging out the current truth ever since.

My father went to milk, and my mother and I waved goodbye to the pretty school teacher, and the maple tree in the yard wasn’t all that big then.

Not just credit, but simple things like buying a cell phone, establishing a bank account, boarding airplanes, even buying a house or renting and especially insurance rates, are determined by your credit rating at three for profit credit rating agencies.

My wife can’t find her driver’s license.

To replace it she needs not only her North Dakota birth certificate but her divorce degree in South Dakota in 1996 and our marriage certificate in South Dakota in 2000, plus a utility bill in her name and a letter from the government addressed to her.

And to renew mine I need a birth certificate and a utility bill and a letter addressed to me from the government.

Or we can’t board planes.

Maybe twenty years ago, I won disability for a young man for mental challenges, and his loving, caring mother placed him in public housing in a town outside her county.

He had a part time job, and freedom, and enjoyed his life as much as we all do, maybe more because he was young.

And in his housing unit, he had neighbors who called him names, made fun of him, and took note that he’d regularly relieve himself outside on a tree behind his apartment.

One morning they took a photograph of him pissing on the tree, not a soul around, about dawn, from a balcony in the housing unit.

The neighbors yelled, we’ve caught you now, and he zipped up and said I’m sorry, I’m sorry.

That town has an ordinance against public indecency.

If convicted he’d have lost his job and had to register as a pervert and lost his housing.
