My oldest boy, his wife, and the new baby are coming to stay for a few days. I sure am looking forward to seeing them, and couldn't be happier that they're coming.

But I'm being kicked outside to smoke, which is pretty much something I always am doing. Looking to spend a good bit of time on the porch.

I got through Christmas Eve at my mom's by just firing one up in the living room after dinner... she's a smoker by the way, but has stopped smoking around my brother for some reason. Probably because of anti smoking propaganda induced hysteria.

My wife asked, "so you're just smoking in here?"

I said, "I'm full."

But... this is different. We have a new baby. When my son was born we did allow a period for lung development before we resumed smoking.

So.... Just thought I'd complain, and let yall boys who have no domain over your own homes know that you're not alone.

I feel your pain bro. My wife is a nonsmoker but has never balked on the rare occasion I have a bowl in the Livingroom. However, if the grandkids are in the house (most weekends) Grandpa has to smoke his pipe on the porch or in the garage 100% of the time. Never mind one or all of them are out there with me, there is no smoking inside.

Men have to sacrifice in different ways than (good) women. Don’t be troubled, normalcy always returns after the holidays. All change is stress, and this season is full of “change” of routine.

Well, you're making a nice gesture of love. I have something similar at home. My in-laws stay at my house for long periods of time, and they don't like tobacco smoke, even if I lock myself in my room and open the window. Now that my sense of smell is out of commission, it's not a problem, but when it comes back, I'll have to smoke outside the house or I don't know where. Or maybe seal off my room like a bunker.

The only issue I can see with that is if they didn't say before hand. And I guess you could look at it this way. If you got a heads up would you have said well then you're not coming or would you have still grumbled but said rather host the new baby even with the rules?
Also we're all used to our crap most people aren't. We like to say how come people don't like this, but smoking especially inside is pretty gross especially if you're not used to it.
The stuff becoming popular had a lot of hurdles to pass before becoming the bees knees or whatever people said back then (it happened in the 1950s right?)

I’ll be the Devil’s Advocate.

My late mother grew up in a household with two Lucky Strike chain smokers. They were poor, always lived in small, rented, city row houses. Both my mother and her sister, non-smokers, developed asthma and COPD.

I enjoy my pipes and cigars, but it’s my thing. I’ve never subjected my family to it (other than that residual aroma in the car!).

I’m 38, and while I don’t smoke inside, I share domain over our home with my wife. She doesn’t like the smell of smoke, so why would I smoke inside the house and force her to smell it?

It would be the same as if she took up a hobby that smelled, say she got into making dead cat scented candles…..I would be telling her to take that out to the garage, and I know she would respect that.

I hope things settle down for you and your normal, and you get back to full enjoyment!
And while I’m at it, a happy new year to you all!

It's extremely rare for me to smoke in the house and can't remember the last time I did - I like the house smelling clean and fresh, lol, and during the nice months I'm on the deck, during the winter in the heated garage if enjoying a pipe at home. My wife grew up in a house with two regular smokers - one cigarettes, the other pipe/cigars - she hasn't needed any more smoke in her environment - she likes the smell of a pipe, but not breathing it. Our kids were grown and gone before I started smoking a pipe, but they wouldn't appreciate the by product in general if inside the house. No big deal to me, I enjoy it more "alone", sounds like you are handling it well!
