Chasing', so it sounds/looks like there is liquor flavoring and maybe the oft-used something else. I like SWR Aromatic (burley based, Virginia as a condiment, and three liqueurs for flavoring) so I might like Velvet, but I'd try a pouch before I'd buy a tub. I was surprised to discover that Granger is an aromatic, "technically" as my local independent tobacconist said ... but very tobacco forward I'd say. These old name brands usually have some charm; something has kept them around for about one hundred years. And yes, dividy97, I give big points for brands that proportion their production to demand and distribute as widely as warranted. No cutesy fan-dance unicorn unattainability. You want Velvet, you got the price, you got the tobacco. No spiritual quest required.

My grandfather smoked George Washington until they stopped making it. I was able to get a 14 oz. tin from pipestud a couple of years ago and still have about half of it jarred. Sometimes I just want something simple.

Some of these plain old blends have a quiet complexity all their own, or perhaps they just pique our imaginations. Either way.

Thursday night, 14MAR, I got to smoke Velvet.
The first thing that struck me was the strong Amaretto/Almond pouch note. This surprised me! While most of the ad-copy talks about a "liqueur-flavoring", nowhere had I read where the specific or dominant topping had ever been specifically identified.
Well Gents, it's as I am reporting: Amaretto/Almond.
While the topping definitely colors the taste of the basic tabak mixture, it certainly did not taste "almondy" in the taste of the smoke. I would say that Velvet is, in my experience and to my pallet, a very good basic OTC mixture; without any of complaints so often cited with various OTCs. One other plus with Velvet is the price; and by that I mean, it's price-point in the tub, is significantly less expensive than other OTCs and basic mixtures.
Because of this, and because this week, Velvet is on sale over at P&C, I would suggest everyone who has yet to try it, give it a go; if for no other reason than to say: "Yes, I have tried this classic Codger blend."
Even if you aren't all that impressed with Velvet, I would doubt anyone would throw it away, or not finish the pouch, eventually. - Sherm Natman

Most burley OTC's are simple enough to mix with many other blends and single leaf to taste. Toss in a little cigar leaf, unflavored Cavendish, Perique ... probably pretty good or better.
