Peterson, always. I believe I read something a couple of months ago that they were aware of the quality control, and admitted to it and were actively working to improve it. Personally, half my pipes are Petersons and I haven't had a single problem with them. I find they are always dependable. As for Nording free hands, they are likewise a dependable pipe, with very rare exceptions. I'm currently having one Nording worked on by Shantiques to enlarge the bore hole; it didn't like certain cuts of tobacco. Most of my Petersons are from the Dracula series, but don't let the novelty fool you--they are excellent smokers. I also have a Irish Harp billiard, a lovely classic pipe with a silver band on it. To expand my collection a bit, I've made a deposit on a Peterson apple, a 03, that I'm anxious to get.

Once again, if you want an unfiltered Savenelli, their Oscar Lucite line fills that bill. Most of their pipes have

a balsa wood filter, most with an optional adaptor for non-filter use, but the Oscar Lucite pipes do not use

a filter so don't need an adaptor.
I also highly recommend the Peterson bent brandy B11, which appears in various of their series including

Killarney and Shannon. Some people see it as a volcano, but it is a lovely sitter and a great light weight pipe.

Some still run just under $100 new, or just over -- others more.

IMO, any Savinelli, Peterson, Danish made Stanwell, Nording or Butz-Choquin in that range of prices would serve you well.

Here are some of my favorites in that price range;
A matched pair of Nording "925" Silver Series blasted billiards.

A Peterson "86" Outdoor, (kinda reminds me of a Devil Anse)

image155-600x450.jpg

A Savinelli "122" Extra

image107-600x303.jpg

A Stanwell "40" Zebrano (Danish Made)

image79-600x254.jpg

A group of Peterson "03's". From left to right they are an Aran, System Standard, Dracula, Kapet, Shannon and a Wicklow.

These are just a few of my favorites. Trust me, there are many more!

Hard to wrong with a Nording but if a more conventional shape is your thing I like the lines of the BC and Rattrays lines . They had all three at the pipe shop in my neck of the woods .They also had some higher end pipes and although they looked bigger they were all light in weight .Maybe its just me but I always pick the lightest pipe of its type when I choose .The other strange thing I do is blow in and suck out if the tone changes to much it goes back on the shelf .The shop keepers hate the last one .

Great info. Thanks for all the info that has been shared here. I've got a few Pete's, one Sav and one Stanwell. All great smokers, but still in search. Y'all have given me a lot to research. I'm smoking a inexpensive pipe I got off eBay right now. I think I gave $10 for it. It's a briar, H.I.S. and has Italy on it. First few bowls were not so great but it's breaking in well. Smoking a bowl of Mississippi River now. But MS River is good in any thing. LOL

I was looking up the Sav Oscar but have only found the Tiger. Haven't found the Lucite yet. Sounds interesting. The Oscar Tiger has a filter.

Over at Milan Tobacconists you have your choice of Wiley Galleons for $148. Hand made, oil cured pipes. Hard to beat that.

Bo (natibo) beat you to it!
Slazanski "Elegance"

Price: 120 eur

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/my-new-slazanski

Although he did have to kick an extra 15 dollars in.
Otherwise you could spend 114 dollars and get a Savinelli Porto Cervo Smooth (812).

Oops, beat you to it!

... and I'll through my support for the estate pipe purchase in as well. You can easily get an estate Radice or Caminetto for that price, often professionally refurbished. You can also pick up 2 estate Ascortis for that price often on EBay. These are all incredible smoking Italian handmade pipes that, for whatever reason, sell very in expensively compared to their original retail price on the estate market. I'll also throw in a plug for Marty Pulvers briar or Briar Blues for estate (and sometimes new) pipes in this range. I picked up an unbelievable unsmoked Jacono pipe from Marty for $70-$80 off the retail price and Briar Blues has equally great deals. You can't find a cheaper Peterson (often unsmoked) than on Marty's website if you are just patient. And disregard his rants about Peterson, if there is something wrong with the pipe he'll tell you - he's pretty, ummm, forthright about such things.

Someone may have mentioned them and I missed it but Luciano is a good maker to look at as well.

Rob, given the parameters you pose, I would go with one of these ... smoking pipes is a first class operation and the eBay vendor in the other two instances is a person who is known to me and is someone I have implicit trust in.

I would offer the following possibilities:
1. Brebbia pipes. I have one Sabbiata series and love it.
2. BC Butz Choquin. I have three (all in your price range) and they are exceptional smokers.
3. Estate pipes are a good deal if you can find one in the $100. range
4. Not a fan of Peterson's as mine smokes hot
Good luck and enjoy your travels through the PAD world.

There is a lot of talk about the Stanwells being made in Italy... How do you know, Denmark or Italy? All I see on Smoking Pipes has Denmark???

I got that but when did the change occur?
Also, I'm really liking this Neerup-
