All of these selections work. My set would be:

Amphora Burley
Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic
Orlik Golden Slice
C&D Tuggle Hall

I would think you should try 4 different genres of blends. And they should be relatively easy to obtain and smoke. So these aren't my favorites but fit those parameters.

Virginia - GL Pease - Union Square (flake but rub it out to make it easier to pack and smoke)

Virginia Perique - Escudo Navy Deluxe (flake but again, rub it out)

English - GLP Quiet Nights (broke flake, rub it out)

Virginia Oriental - C&D Oriental Silk or Bijou

I think you can find all of those available at Tobacco Pipes or Smoking Pipes. I smoke every one of those, I think you'll enjoy them.

CAO Eileen's dream for a decent goopy aromatic (but try CAO Cherrybomb specifically if you want to know how bad goopy aromatics can be)

Samuel Gawith Full VA Flake (not that readily available, or Orlik Golden Sliced instead)

Peterson Nightcap for a classic strong English (not necessarily my favorite but you wanted contrast)

Sutliff Match Country Doctor for a Burley based codger blend (it has some latakia and VA but those are condiments)

Yes, my recommends were a little strong, but they were my favs, and he asked for four that are very different. Certainly these blends are that. And who knows, he may like turning into a fire-breathing dragon:). I did. I knew that Dark Flake would light my fire, and it did, for years. If I cave and smoke a bowl, it would undoubtedly be that.

G.L. Pease Gaslight (very heavy latakia. Plug Cut)
Cornell and Diehl Super Balkan (A medium bodied English. Ribbon/broken Flake cut)
Mac Barren HH Pure Virginia (light, sweet, rich. 100% Virginia. Flake cut)
Cornell and Diehl Kajun Kake (dark, tangy, spicy. Virginia and perique. Cake cut)

I believe these 4 will give you a broad spectrum, representative of the major flavor profiles that pipe tobacco offers.

I would add 2 more for a more complete representation though.

Seattle pipe club Mississippi River (a nice balance of sweet, sour, and toasted)

Mac Barren HH old Dark fired (a nice BBQ smokiness)

Rattray Bagpipers Dream-Aromatic
Escudo-VaPer
John Cotton Smyrna-Heavy Latakia/Balkan
Presbyterian-Light Latakia
Peterson (Dunhill) Flake-VA Flake
Gawith Grousemoor-Lakeland Aromatic

Without knowing what you liked or did not like, I think this gives a wide idea of what you can expect (save a burley, not much of a burley smoker).

2 reasons. First, for the same reason I  saltedplug; the combination of those 4 blends would drive away most new smokers. Second, I perceive a tendency for you to recommend Balkan Supreme to every newbie which IMO is a mistake. No slight was intended and I do realize that you, and many other members, were giving the OP exactly what he asked (sometimes in the extreme).
