I'm a little mixed on this one. I think there should be more, well, different stickies at the top with some of the more interesting threads, like a Hall of Fame type thing. But I'm sure we all like explaining to new members about packing and breathing.
I know when I started out here I was asking all the usual questions, and Tom and Jesse took their time to explain everything to me: the drying, the packing, the cadence. That went a long way in making me a more confident pipe smoker.

Since 1997 many of the same topics, questions, and answers. The players change with the times which leads to new pertinent content, or hilarious entertainment.

Totally agree with duane, when i first started i found this forum and asked a ton of questions which i'm sure had some veterans rolling there eyes. However most of the members here had plenty of invaluable info for me and i am thankful for it. It made me enjoy this wonderful hobby even more and i discovered how amazing this community really is. When you can chat with someone who has been there and done that, it makes you feel more comfortable with what you are learning, and not intimidated to ask the (what you might think) silly questions. After all if you want to learn you have to ask questions. Eventually your confidence will grow and thats when pipe smoking will really become enjoyable. Not to mention the possibility of making some good friends along the way.

Duane's got it right. Conversation is the life blood of fora. And over time, as boredom sets in among older members and they and their canned responses fade away, new room is made for newer members and THEIR canned responses. And the cycle of life continues. Kumbaya!
Besides, people don't look at the stickies, because they're not presented as FAQs, just as a bunch of closed topics under the heading "current discussion". So they're rendered invisible and have been pretty much rendered a waste of space. It's just bad design.
For example there's an excellent FAQ on how to post an image, and because the stickies are visually neutered, no one knows it's there, no one reads it, and we continue to get "how do I post an image?" posts.
And, it's quite possible that the FAQ's could be properly set up visually and they would still get ignored. No way to know since it's not been tried.

I have been here a while and over the years my answers to stock questions has changed. Years ago when someone asked how do you smoke a flake, my answer would have been to cube cut them. Now my answer would be I almost always fold and stuff my flakes.
Without the newbies asking questions this site would get really slow. When someone asks a question it is important that they get an answer and not just a link to a previous discussion on the same topic. As old timers we have an obligation to make the newcomer feel welcome and to help them as we were helped years ago.

This would be akin to a father handing his child an atlas when the kid asks him where a particular country is.

I had a teacher in elementary school that would tell you to look in the dictionary when inquiring about the spelling of a word. Kinda like telling someone to learn to swim before jumping in the water.

Tough love! But at least you learned how to fend for yourself. I wish colleges taught students job finding skills.

Well we're certainly getting the full gambit of questions today. Tin VS jar, pipe stem preference, stuck stems, image posting... It's ironic, with the conversation of this thread. But I still wouldn't have it any other way. If someone asks about New Vs Estate, I'll consider the day complete.

Not long ago, I joined another forum in which every time I asked a question I was told to use the search engine to find the older posts... at which point I would spend a stupid amount of time trying to find the answer to my question. I didn't stick around on that forum for very long at all.
Good point. Telling someone to effin' google it is against the rules/guidelines posted above as well. It is off putting.
