I’m sure he means well. Used to see these people at the cigar lounge I used to go to. Recounting everything that’s been published on the interwebs, right or wrong.

I picked up on the pipe smoking in a day or two. It really isn't that difficult if you've ever smoked cigars or even black and milds. It is about the rhythm of the puff. I love exhaling out my nose while I continue to puff a bit more. What kind of inhaling is that called again?

I love it when after a month, a new guy is all... "Do as I say unto you..."

I know, I know, you've probably been smoking pipes since you were 17... puffy
Welcome to the forum Ted. You've got the right attitude. I like that you feel comfortable enough with us to post like this. Newbies... phhht... there's going to be so many people with so many conflicting bits of advice that seem like rules or absolutes, but really, we all just want to post stuff that we think will help.
If you want to put the stem in your nose and smoke your pipe that way, we support you (just please post pics). If you want to huff and puff your pipe like a fat girl chasing a short bus, we support you (just don't set next to me). If you want to smoke grape chewing gum flavored tobacco in ridiculously large pipes, we even have an expert in that here.
Just find what suits ya, take a little advice here and there, and know that there ain't no rules in this. Nothing is sacred in pipes. It's all about finding that little bit of joy in the hobby and hanging onto it.

But, there are two absolutes here. Capitalize your thread titles, and don't piss in the ashtrays. Well, the second is my rule. I hate soggy ashtrays. puffy
There are other rules, but there's a difference in a rule and an absolute. Absolute is a vodka... but, don't piss in ashtrays!! And, get your shoes off the coffee table!!!

Don't forget, if you smoke with your stem in your nose, post pics!! puffy

I'd only recommend a starter kit if you are a long way from a pipe shop. Even if you are ordering online, better to do your own kit, so you think about each item in getting started. Pick out a specific pipe and make all those decisions: brand, shape, filter or not, finish, etc. etc. That way you learn about each aspect rather than being handed a pipe, good or bad, and having to learn about the choices later. Also remember to select the tobacco and accessories, pipe cleaners (Which type? Brand?) and a pipe tool, Czech tool or pipe nail? If you make a wrong choice, you learn from that. Likewise with tobacco. Read about it, think about it, compare, read a review or two, and so on. Matches, lighter. Part of the pleasure is in the learning and becoming more knowledgeable. You might pay a little more, or if budget is a consideration, you may actually pay a little less.
