Hi all, I’ve been smoking a pipe for about a year now and as much I love the experience much more then cigarettes... I chain smoked unfiltered cigarettes for almost 20 years so I accidentally inhale my smoke quite a bit. It usually doesn’t hurt but that might be part of the problem.

how much damage am I doing to my heart and lungs doing this and does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop inhaling?

TRY SIPPING...
Puffing for me is sipping on a thinned out milkshake...not gulping as if your toking on a Marlboro. Starting out you have to remind yourself that your pipe is not a cigarette. ? I know it’s ridiculous, but many inhale at first and usually you quickly realize it’s not a good idea. I’m sure I still occasionally take smoke into my lungs, I’m not sure how to completely avoid it.
Something we all know is that repeatedly inhaling the smoke from your pipe will likely damage your body long-term. But, at least you’re not inhaling the chemicals that are in mass produced cigarettes...terrible stuff.
Enjoy & best of luck! ?☕

I get the sipping thing, that’s typically what I do when I’m smoking correctly but you have to remember I smoked Rollies not marlboros. So I’m not used to taking heavy draws off a cigarette. And I did that for 20 years and smoked em like a fish,
So sometime I just have the pipe in my mouth and I’ll inhale a bunch of smoke without feeling it or realizing.
I’ve been having light chest pains and shortness of breath for over a month and I’ve gotten covid tests, so I’m trying to see if it’s possibly the pipe smoke may have cause more damage then I anticipated before I start thinking of the other possibilities.
as well as seeing if anyone had as similar problem inhaling and how they got over it.
sometimes I do it right and sometimes I’m just not thinking about it.

Well with SOB & chest pain for over a month you might want to get that checked out sooner than later by your physician. Your symptoms could very well be cardiac related. I’d also tone it down on the piping in general until these symptoms are resolved. Best of luck and I surely hope you get a handle on puffing. It’s a fantastic hobby that has given me so much. ?☕

I do the same thing, don't worry about it unless it's an aromatic. I mostly smoke straight blends with no topping and only one with very light casing--I do smoke two aromatic blends, though, and I don't inhale those. The straight blends are far cleaner than cigarette tobacco and if it's only occasionally that you inhale (not with every drag) don't worry about it. I particularly don't care because I live in a rural area...people who live in the nearest city are inhaling far worse crap than I am and people that live in big cities are inhaling even more than that.

Please get a physician to check the symptoms. Probably a good idea to lay off the pipe for a while. If you do start pipe smoking again, do not clench and do not puff like a locomotive. Small sips only and hold the pipie in your hand not between your teeth. Take care.

Stop clenching the pipe. Only sip the tobacco then take the pipe away. Make a conscious effort to only use your mouth to puff the smoke... not your gullet or throat.

Awww man, just holding my pipe in my teeth is kind of my favorite thing. I topically try not to do this while smoking and sometimes with bite down on my pipe for hours before lighting it.
And it’s a little too fun pretending I’m a train sometimes ???

but I totally get what you’re saying and I’ll try to refrain from clenching. Thanks guys!

I notice when I clench sometimes without thinking and especially outside in any breeze that the smoke sort of forces itself down your throat.

Seems simple to me. Stop inhaling. You were intelligent enough to write the post so you're intelligent enough for concious thought. You're looking for someone to tell you everything is fine. Or perhaps for free medical advice. The solution is much simpler than that. If you very rarely inhale a little, it's not going to kill you. Otherwise, just stop inhaling. Or quit altogether.
