Hello! I am looking for some ideas on some pre soaks to loosen the years of tar inside the stem? I am not a fan of oxyclean. I am looking for a product to use so instead of 50 pipe cleaners in alcohol it only takes a few. Also it has to be non toxic and natural if possible

Anyone try Natures Orange?

Very hot water and lots of pipe cleaners. Sometimes you gotta work for it.

Yeah I understand, but its also like trying to sweep a cement driveway. You can sweep forever and still pull dirt up. I was looking to see if there is anything that could break down some of the tar and get it flushed with water. As a liquid soak would be able to get to every part of the inside of the stem. I tried steam and that did not work.

Stick with the alcohol and buy yourself a couple of nylon shank cleaning brushes. With a particularly stubborn stem, I'll soak a pipe cleaner in alcohol and just leave it in the stem for an hour so that the alcohol leeches into the crud. The scrub out and repeat, letting the alcohol soak in. You can use the shank brushes to scrub out the gunk and then rinse them off when you're done.

Also, pick up some White Elephant brand bristle pipe cleaners. They're softer than the BJ Longs, so they won't score up the interior of the stem airway, but will do better than plain pipe cleaners for keeping the stem airway clean.

Find someone with or buy your own ultrasonic cleaning machine. Small ones are made for jewelry cleaning. Fill it up with alcohol and drop in the stem, walk away for a day. That’s what I say, in the month of May……….🙄

Natures Orange?

A combination of citric acid and essential oil from oranges. No. I would never ever try that for my pipecleaning and advise you to forget that idea asap, but then, I am an oxyclean fan.

Yes its a natural food grade solvent, made of crushed orange peels from Flordia. Then I was going to flush it with water.

I have an ultra sonic machine and have tried alcohol, letting a stem sit in alcohol did more damage than good.
I also have tried a dental cleaning tablet in the ultra sonic machine and that didnt work. I dont think the ultra sonic machine is going to work as I think the tube is to small

I have never thought of using my utrasonic machine for cleaning my pipes or parts of them. I do have this hand soap here that is made out of oranges as you describe but that is just what it is, hand soap.

This. And since you're already scrubbing, don't be afraid of some liquid dish soap, like Dawn. Do the entire pipe with running warm water and dish soap with a tube brush. Airway, mortise, etc. I know. I know. The world has everyone frightful of water touching wood, but it won't hurt anything other than the wax shine. Briar is tough. Very tough. You aren't going to damage anything with a little soap and a brush. Alcohol is great for breaking down the tars and gunk, but it won't clean clean like soap does. No reason to go through a pack of pipe cleaners when you can do a more thorough job like this. Chances are very likely you're going to have to buff the stem anyway. Why do a half-arsed job and still have to polish?

Please report back with how the orange cleaner works. I use 100% D-Limonene to remove glue left behind by labels. It sure is a powerful solvent. I've a feeling it may soften vulcanite if left on too long.

Okay, will do! I do want to mention this is for estate pipes, so its not meant to be daily cleaning procedure
