Despite some draconian dispute that was lost amogst a halo of smoke years ago, I believe both are for world pipe smoking dominance by any means necessary ... one bowl at a time.
Since fistfights are frowned upon, disputes are settled by full contact smoking in a battle of the briars. Hence the phrase "broken pipe" when a brother of the briar departs.
Much like the English football fans, hooligans are amongst the members in both camps with goals to honorably displace both the fastest and slowest smoking champions using various shenanigans, tipples of adult beverages, and songs about battles of the past.
