I was thinking of inventing a pipe that one can smoke while hanging upside down. What do you guys think, is there a market for it? Just kidding, but something like that... certainly would be revolutionary!

Once I was smoking a pipe with a loose tenon, and, during mid-smoke, the bowl loosened, twisted upside down, and poured the entire hot burning contents on my lab while driving!

You can smoke a well packed pipe upside-down; if I notice my pipe is starting to gurgle or get steamy when I'm predisposed (read: behind the wheel, not able to mess around with pipe-cleaners), I'll often flip it over for a puff or two, to facilitate running the excess moisture back into the burning cherry.

mlaug... LOL... Australia you say? LOL.
Kashmir... I bet you had to swerve a bit. That's a hell of a story; and a hell of an experience.

Yeah. I learned from it. Usually after cleaning my pipes with salt and grain alcohol, sometimes, the tenon becomes loose from the bit. It usually goes away after a few smokes, but for those that don't I have wrapped clear scotch tape to hold the bowl to the bit. There is a way to increase the diameter of the bit so you get a tighter fit, but I haven't tried it yet. For tenons that are too tight I just rub the tenon on a candle to get some wax on it. That loosens it up. My thoughts...

schmitzbitz... I've never thought of that technique... I can think of a few things that piss me off; and gurgles are among the top ten. I've been tilting the pipe stem down, tap tap tapping and allowing those three or four drops of moisture to drip out.

Aye, thats how I started too Pipe, but I found that Vancouver rush-hour traffic requires at least 99% of my attention to navigate - 14 years of driving, 4 accidents, and I've not been at fault in one. A quick flip of the pipe for a couple of puffs, and back to normal...just make sure you've already tamped, otherwise you will end up looking like you've been makin' bacon in the nude, for the burns.

Ser Jacopo makes a pipe in the "Insanus" line with a double ended bowl (two separate tobacco chambers, top and bottom) with a side mounted stem at the midline. I'm not certain but there may be a switch or valve to select the bowl... One could smoke upside-down AND right side up!

Maybe a bowl with a weight on the bottom, and a ball-bearing ring around the stem. So that no matter what way you leaned the bowl would always be facing up.

Pair a setup like that with one of those weird around-the-neck harmonica rigs, and you may have a perfect pipe for the "Pipe smokers who are into rock climbing" niche.

It sounds like you have too much time on your hands.

If you're hanging upside down smoking a pipe, and I can't imagine why,

then why not just spin the pipe upside down relative to you? :P

Because... that would be BORING! What the pipe smoking world needs... is a new look! Pipes with built in tampers... or... built in digital temperature gauges or... a line with... M.E.S. (moisture elimination system). JUST KIDDING! Just playful thoughts!

Here's a link to a stereo pipe that offers an alternative to boring old pipes.

Line-up the dots on the stem to select which blend you want to take drag on.

Could be good to A-B compare Dunhill Navy Roll with Escudo, e.g.
