Since all my tobacco came in this week, I needed to get the packages lined up for next week. Here are a couple of pipes I picked up off of Ebay yesterday.
The first one is a 1977 DUNHILL SHELL 1706-563 SANDBLAST SEMI BENT CHIMNEY that has a story behind it. It used to be a pipe that was carried by a Dunhill sales rep and thus is stamped NOT FOR SALE. The seller described this as being rare and very collectible, so I took the shot. I wanted a larger Dunhill and he said this was a group 5-6, so I just had to buy it especially for the price.
The next pipe is a Lane Era Charatan Distinction After Hours pipe. It is a nice size pipe in excellent condition. Again the price was too good to pass up.

Not for sale lol I wonder if it was stolen from Dunhill or something. I doubt it was the property of the salesmen. hmmm.
Nice score on your stolen booty! Nice classic dunhill shape.

I bought the Dunhill from the James Upshall Company. He sells a lot of old new stock and some really cool pipes. He goes by the handle of jamesupshallpipeco. You should check out his store. This is the description he had on the pipe.
"

This beautiful 1977 Dunhill Shell 1706-563 Semi Bent Chimney was finished in a transparent two tone dark tan staining over a 360 degree array of sand/ring graining to the bowl and shank – with a smooth tan name plate on the flat base of the shank. The original tapered vulcanite mouthpiece is in as good condition as the day it was fitted, bearing the Dunhill white dot. The tobacco chamber is in mint condition. This pipe was used as a Salesman sample and eventually found its way into rotation. These samples are quite sought after by the Dunhill collector as they are quite rare. The crisp and very well defined nomenclature on the base of the flat shank reads: 1706-563 - DUNHILL SHELL – MADE IN ENGLAND 17. This is over stamped by NOT FOR SALE."

Gorgeous brother...absolutely gorgeous! I'd sell a kidney for that Dunhill Shell.

I like your style.
Does the double stamping on the Charatan have any effect on the value?

Major pipe envy here on both accounts! Great choices. The Group 5 Dunhill is a perfect size, for my tastes.
I own two After Hours pipes (neither as nice as that one!). That one was on Ebay for quite a while (I was surprised) and at a very reasonable price. I admired that pipe so many times, I lost count, but in the end, because it was a straight pipe, I didn't hit the "buy" button. Seeing it again makes me reconsider. That polished, broad bowl top really sets the hook. That is also a very unique (for After Hours) extension, I've not yet seen one with decorative rings. It looks like someone did a great job restoring that stem. I find the DC After Hours rubber stems to be the most comfortable stems I own. I'll be shocked if you don't report that it is an outstanding smoker. Welcome to the club!

Those are beautiful pipes, my friend. I am especially fond of Dunhill Sandblasts, looks rich, like red velvet cake. Hope they are as pleasant to smoke as they are to look upon.

Al, I was watching the charatan for a while also, I made three bid attempts that all failed. Finally I just said screw it and pulled the trigger. I really liked the thickness of the walls and the treatment on the shank. I have three more Charatans on the way, once I smoke them I will post my thoughts.
chispa, I have no idea what it does to the value, maybe one of the guys here can answer that one.

Al, does the After Hours aspect add value over a basic Distinction or detract? I couldn't find any used After Hours pipes on line and I really like the look of it. The only one I saw was a new one at Smokers Haven going for 395.00. After looking at the prices and condition of all the Distinctions I saw on line, I figured I got a good deal on this one.
