I hoped that wasn't your hand...

When I see a pipe I truly want I usually have to buy it right away (if funding allows) because they aren't new production and when they're gone they're gone.

I'm also a bargain shopper.. won't overpay for something I want either. :)

I don't own any morta pipes and I never thought I'd want one until I saw what Fred Keller is making-

Posting this one without fear because some lucky bastard already snatched it up.

Interesting look (color). Bowl is a little short for my taste. But I do have an il Duca that’s similar.

I only own two Morta pipes, an Omar King, and a Don Warren Prince. I’d have to say they smoke similiar to my briars. The most attractive thing about them is the pattern of the oak.

but don't get me wrong there are brand new production pipes that get me going too.. not much you can do about the price on them besides watch for sales! I get 10% off on Peterson from SPC so sometimes they have an additional sitewide sale on Pete's so when that happens they can become fairly reasonable.

Do you find that morta gets any hotter than briar? I've heard some horror stories about them burning through quickly. That is currently my only reservation on pulling the trigger in purchasing one.

It does seem to run slightly warmer than briar. Probably because of the mineralization.

Morta is a recent product in terms of stummel use. Probably the last 10-15 years as far as I know.

One of the things I had read was to treat it as Meerschaum; wiping out the bowl and not letting it build cake. I followed that advice initially. With the DW Prince, I have smoked perhaps 50 bowls of HH ODF. After about 15 bowls there was a spot in the side of the bowl that did begin to burn. There appeared to be a flaw initially but I discounted it. I scraped out the burn spot, and used some waterglass (Sodium Silicate) to treat the area.

I was careful to smoke it gently until it built some cake over that area. I now treat it like my briar pipes, and the burn area does not appear to have expanded.

Now, I haven’t smoked the Omar King much in order for it to add to my opinion.

So, in my opinion, if you treat it like a hardwood pipe initially then you shouldn’t have any problems.

I guess if you can drill it and shape it like wood, then it will burn like wood. I’ve never worked with a Morta blank either, so I can’t really say how much harder it is compared to other woods. But unlike clay or meerschaum I do know that it will burn. And I didn’t go whole hog when I started with the DW either.

All pipes have the potential for issues. I now let it sit and cool down for several hours, then gently wipe the ash with a pipe cleaner or a microfiber cloth.

Hope this was helpful.

Very helpful, Craig. Thank you!

Perhaps Keller would make me a custom morta with ultra-thick walls to account for some of the burning I may experience.

Longevity is very important to me, so I will take your advice on letting some cake build to protect it.

I would think if you just treat it as a regular briar or hardwood pipe you’d be fine.

There has been a lot written in the past about Morta that in my experience is not correct, that gets parroted by others that have most likely never owned or smoked a Morta pipe.

Although I admit the Porsche pipes are catchy, as are the wild stem colors by some English makers, I prefer a wood stummel smooth or blasted, with a black or Cumberland stem. My thinking is not traditional, but in pipes and ice cream, I prefer vanilla.
