I had posted this picture before trying to ID it, but now I want to find one like it. I have scoured the webs but can't find one like it. Does anyone know where I can get one similar?
I did a search for you. If I'm not mistaken, they call that style of pipe a "Bullmoose Rhodesian" or, basically, a very squat Rhodesian pipe. Unfortunately, I could not find an exact match for you. I've only seen several bullmoose pipes and none that looked similar to the one in your picture.
The absolute closest I could find is this: Savinelli Tignanello Smooth Pipe #624 Bent Rhodesian
It's nowhere near an exact match, but it's a partial bend with a squat profile and a flat bit. It's also a bulldog (square shank). Not sure why Cup o' Joes has it listed as a Rhodesian (round shank). 8O
Anyway, sorry I couldn't help all that much. Good luck in your search.
DR Grabow made one very similar to that, I have two or three of them, if I get around to it I will take a picture of them and see if they compare, I am not sure, they have been in my Shadow Box for a while, great smokers too.
Thanks everyone for the bits of info. I had offered to buy this particular one from the owner, but it was his father's and was keeping it for memories. If I can't find one I will definitely get one custom made.
@bigvan, it's hard to explain. It seems different than a typical rhodesian and it just calls to me. When I held it in my hand it was just a perfect feeling. May sound corny, but I'm sure others have felt the same way about certain pipes. lol.
Yeah that is a very stylized Rhodesian. Very short, squat, stubby and chunky. I know I have seen that same shape somewhere but I can't think of where. My memory says Brebbia or GBD but I have a memory like a sieve.
@ Philip: How do you like those Design Berlin pipes. I have eyeballed them a time or 2 but never knew anyone who owned one. Also, It's great to see another Philip that spells his name with 1 l = )
Not trolling, just trying to get more information. Is it the grain? The saddle stem? The shorter than normal length? The single channel around the bowl rather than the more common bead? Is it by a particular maker? All are descriptors that if known, I can keep my eye out for.
I've traded tobacco with mattmars in the past so I'm pretty sure he realizes the intent of my question. But apparently you didn't.
Some beautiful pipes have been shown/linked. I will do some more looking and if I can't find one, I will contact someone to make one for me. Thanks everyone for the help.
Reviving this. I think I have figured out what the pipe I want might be. I figured that the rest of the pipes in the collection the guy had were Kaywoodies, I looked at the Kaywoodie catalog from the late '50s to early '60s and saw http://pipepages.com/kwg-oversize#1. I believe it may be the John Henry or Colossus. Now to just find one for sale and I'll be set!
