Aristocob is a great seller and nice guy. I bought my first cobs from him and all subsequent ones, too. He's ideal for someone like me who does not have ready access to Missouri Meerschaum pipes, the only brand worth buying. He combines the shipping so that no matter how many you buy, you still only pay the S&H cost of one pipe - he'll cover the rest. I got 12 in my last order, they were also on sale.
Wolfscout, that's a great idea with regards to giving out cobs. I thought about it the other day. A buddy of mine is an ex-smoker (for financial reasons, not because he was aching to quit) with a lot of time on his hands, still occasionally smokes Captain Black mini cigars. It's his birthday this month and when I visit again I may bring over a bottle of whiskey to share and give him a cob with some small tobacco samples. Couldn't hurt!
PS... Those little aromatic "cigars" are what led me to seek out this hobby! I saw "Pipe Tobacco Cigar" on the packaging and decided to cut out the middleman and seek out something for a longer, less acrid smoke. Wonderful decision to leave those behind and enjoy the world of pipe tobacco. Even Captain Black is much better in the pipe than in those sticks.

The cob, genuine and unpretentious, uniquely American, it is part of our heritage, our lore.

Cobs may or may not be for pipe "enthusiasts" but they are definitely for pipe "smokers." There is a distinction.

They're not an investment. They're just a pipe, made here in Missouri.

They're not made for galleries or display cases. They're made to smoke.

And that they do quite well.
Here's a poetic tribute to the incomparable cob:
"My Corn-Cob Pipe"

By Paul Laurence Dunbar
Men may sing of their Havanas, elevating to the stars

The real or fancied virtues of their foreign–made cigars;

But I worship Nicotina at a different sort of shrine,

And she sits enthroned in glory in this corn–cob pipe of mine.
It ’s as fragrant as the meadows when the clover is in bloom;

It ’s as dainty as the essence of the daintiest perfume;

It ’s as sweet as are the orchards when the fruit is hanging ripe,

With the sun’s warm kiss upon them—is this corn–cob pipe.
Thro’ the smoke about it clinging, I delight its form to trace,

Like an oriental beauty with a veil upon her face;

And my room is dim with vapour as a church when censers sway,

As I clasp it to my bosom—in a figurative way.
It consoles me in misfortune and it cheers me in distress,

And it proves a warm partaker of my pleasures in success;

So I hail it as a symbol, friendship’s true and worthy type,

And I press my lips devoutly to my corn–cob pipe.

I really like the MM Country Gentleman. Will be interested to hear what you think. I like the weight and way it feels in my hand. Just wish it had a more substantial stem on it.
Let me know how you like it.

fshu2 last week, I too started smoking a cob again. I had been smoking a briar mainly for the last year or so. I thought I hated cobs but when I smoked mine the other day it was very enjoyable. I felt like I could taste the tobacco better in my cob than my briar. That may be due to inexperiance as a pipe smoker though. The next time I'm at my B&M I'm going to make sure I pick up one more to add to my rotation. :puffy:

i wouldn't be so hasty to say its your inexperience that you taste it better the cob is different and can bring out the flavor more. i know i enjoy them far more.

I'm a newbie at the pipes so how do you break in a Cob Pipe? Any different from the briar?

truthfully you dont really break them in from my experience. some people believe that if you dont smoke the first bowl all the way to the bottom it will go out, i do not believe this every cob iv ever used just pack light and enjoy.

What I read early on is that cobs somewhat thrive on neglect. Honestly I've found this to be the case. I didn't break mine in (like I did my briar), just filled it and smoked. Also, after probably 10+ bowls each, I've never put a pipe cleaner down the stem of either of them and no problems whatsoever!
One thing I will say is that I did notice the "corny" undertones of taste early on. Certainly wasn't bothered by them - actually it added an interesting "depth" to the flavor. However that being said, I enjoy the smoke more now that a cake has built up a bit and the end end of the stem in the bowl has charred a bit.
Looking forward to one tonight actually! But not looking forward to the single digit temps on the backporch though...

Well actually didn't smoke a cob tonight.
A bowl of Mac Baren 7 Seas Gold in the MM cherry hardwood after work (not sure if it is the 7 Seas or the MM hardwood, but just now enjoying that as much lately), then an evening G.L. Pease Maltese Falcon in my one and only briar after dinner.
That Maltese Falcon is so good!

last night after a long night of studying i got a chance to smoke my new MM country gentlemen. first off the pipe its self is very well made and draws great. i filled it with some black Cavendish and enjoyed it very much. it smoked cool and down to the bottom with no trouble whatsoever the air was fairly still last night so i got a great smoke and i think that this may very well be my new go to pipe.

I say smoke what you like. I've found that a cob is perfect for holding in your mouth while working around the house because of it's light weight.

I got my Great Dane Egg from aristocob (I think that was the guy) today along with the Old Hickory (also MM) and the Great Dane really does smoke well. . .great! I am very happy. The only complaint I have is that, as usual, it can't -quite- handle how wet my Irish Creme is and I had to run a pipe cleaner through halfway through the bowl, but the Peterson 307 and my clays are they only pipes that seem capable of getting through a whoel bowl of that stuff anything close to dry, and the 307 has about a teaspoon of fluid in the system chambre at the end of the bowl ha ha. . .man its gross.
