I sent a tin of 1792 to a pipe smoking friend for a gift, along with another blend, and he really liked the other blend. He didn't mention the 1792, so I got his drift. I'd bought 1792 because I knew he liked full-strength tobacco, but I didn't really understand its profile at the time. Next time a gift is in order, I'll send Semois; I know he likes that a lot. So, unless someone asks for 1792 specifically, it's not a good gift choice, in my experience.
G&H Brown twist (especially the Rum variant) is my favorite. That said, it sounds like you got some scented version, or perhaps your tobacconist mixed up the Black twist sliced (since I believe it always has some flavoring added.)
The nicotine level sounds about right though. If it was way too much for you, then you probably won't like this genre of tobacco regardless.
I'm a fan of the brown! Sorry you didn't enjoy it. Don't avoid GH&Co because of that, they have many very good tobaccos that are nothing like the ropes. Kendall Dark and Dark Bird's eye come to mind. Samuel Gawith, their sister company, also makes some delightful smokes that share no commonalities with Brown Bogie. St. James Flake and Squadron Leader are two of my favorite Tobaccos.
I still think something had to be up with the tobacconist. I've never heard of someone getting Lakeland off of one of their ropes. Sure--I hear it all the time about flakes and other unscented offerings, but they don't even carry Lakeland-scented twists, so a mix up would be difficult. And I've had every guy at my pipe club smoke brown twist, since it's my favorite, and none have ever detected anything but strong tobacco with, as you say, and almost cigar-ish taste.
I'm willing to bet that the tobacconist mislabeled something. A lot of them in my area don't know anything about pipe tobacco... they've told me the silliest stuff. I always find it hard to believe B&Ms keep that kind of staff around, but it's not like there is a ton of money in this, so many of the guys there are basically just warm bodies to man the cash register. Many know little about cigars and even less about pipe tobacco in my experience.
Sure thing! I wasn't meaning to badmouth the staff of brick and mortars--I'm sure there are many knowledgeable ones out there.
But one time as a new smoker I went to a place asking for an English blend, or at least something that had a good bit of Latakia. I'd never tasted Latakia, so when he handed me a few ounces of some really aromatic stuff, I asked him if he was sure it had Latakia and he said it certainly was. It was a decent aro, but I'm pretty sure it was repackaged Lane 1Q... no latakia to speak of.
