My concern would be with toxicity of the glue. I don't know if there would be, but I'd wonder till I found out.

Does the glue have potential to give off harmful gasses?

I used Elmers wood filler on the inside, and the tube has a warning about eye and mucus membrane contact, but doesn't say anything about it being toxic. But lets face it, outside of the white paste we couldn't resist tasting in grade school (I mean why make it taste minty?) most glue probably has some toxicity. But covering the inside of the bowl with pipe mud should insulate the burning tobacco from the very small amount of glue showing in the crack. As far as the outside of the bowl, I don't think the heat get so hot there so as to cause toxic fumes from the CA glue. I saw this type of repair done on Reborn Pipes and I don't remember any warnings about toxic problems. Again, time will tell, and if I suddenly stop posting here, well this might be the cause....

Orley, that's an awesome repair, whether or not it holds up, I think. What is CA? Briar dust?

CA= cyanoacrylate= super glue - briar dust= similar to sawdust only from briar

I mix briar dust from sanding or filing of old briar from other projects with super glue to make a crack filler. Usually I put the super glue in the crack, then pour the briar dust over it and let it soak in. Then after it hardens, filing and sanding to form to the original shape of the pipe bowl.

What would you recommend to someone just starting on restoring/repairing? Is wood putty okay to use for filling large cracks? I'm sure if after several projects, there will be a buildup of briar dust and, trust me, I plan to use your method. But for beginners, currently working on one restoration, is the wood filler/putty okay or is there a toxicity issue? To be clear this is on the outside of the bowl.
Thanks!
