I don't mean to inhale and I don't think I am

I'm just sipping away, the pipe clenched in my teeth

but how else do i explain my little smoker's cough and the stuff i hack up?

If you're pipe is clenched, then you may be absentmindedly inhaling since you also need to breathe, and with the pipe in your mouth, it's going to be inhaled.
I still struggle with not inhaling. To combat this, I've taken to smoking my pipe sitting down and focusing on how I puff. Getting a good light and then sipping gently - making sure it only enters my mouth.
I also find that if I am distracted (like reading the forums while smoking), I will inhale more than I intend to.

Do pipes smokers get a smokers cough?
How long have you been smoking?

I've been inhaling a lot more in the last 3 months on purpose ( stuff going on .... no further expansion ) and did notice a little smoker's cough, bit more mucus production ...... and a loss of about 10% body weight , along with some sensitivity to the tip of the tongue...

i tried walking with my pipe after i learned a new word on this forum...lunting.

i quickly removed the pipe from my mouth.

no way could i walk and smoke at the same time without inhaling the smoke.

from now on, the pipe is strictly a sit down adventure.

@rcstan all those effects in just 3 months! Does inhaling increase the nicotine kick?

Damn, rcstan, what in bloody hell are your smoking? I could use the 10% body weight loss but not sure about the blurred vision, and bleeding eyes.

I went through a half kilo box of Ennerdale in 3 weeks at the height of the drama. Probably smoked at least six Group 5 bowls per day. I dropped about 15 lbs out the 150ish I weigh in the last three months. Long story.

Still managing to restore estate pipes and write the condition statements for you guys from SPC so there's definitely a flip side; other than the biggest accomplishemnt which is obvious: full legal custody of my daughter.Glory to God for all things !

Christ almighty! ONE bowel of Ennerdale would be enough to make me vomit my guts out. I'd rather smoke dried monkey shit than a Lakeland blend! But, all the power to you and whatever gives you pleasure.

rcstan, take care of yourself, for your daughter's sake too. Weight loss is probably from stress, but

a physical wouldn't be a bad idea. You can lunt (walk with a pipe) with the pipe in hand, too. Works

fine. It's more of a saunter or stroll, but has most of the benefits and is relaxing for sure.

Wow,

on the coughing thing, I notice that after a brisk lunt about with the dogs, with the pipe clenched, that I get the back of my throat full of smoke, not my lungs. I even get this sometimes when working at my bench with the pipe clenched. My gullet, or back of my throat, gets full of smoke, so that when I take my pipe out and talk, smoke comes out with my words. This also makes me salivate more, thus causing a bit of a small cough. But, I think of a smoker's hack as being more the way I started my day as a cigarette smoker, hacking without doing any real work removing stuff. It's more of an uncontrollable cough, over and over. The cough I get while clenching is more of a quick productive "getting the smoke out of my throat" cough, not a smoker's cough.
But, you may actually have a hack. I'm just thinking about myself, comparing the coughs.

Guys, thanks for the kind words. Because I have chosen to "go public" last year when I got onboard with SPC, I will withhold further elaboration on my dirty laundry on here ( you can PM me ).

As for the weight loss, yes it is mostly stress related; nicotine is an appetite suppressant as well, but I do not in any way shape or form recommend it as a "diet". When time will allow I will visit doc, but I have taken little steps to undo some of the obvious damage ( Biotene etc ) and of course have cut back.

Between mind boggling " antidepressants" and the baccy, I'd rather smoke some Bruyere.
To the OP ..... if you've never used tobacco and you're going full speed ahead on inhaling a pipe, slow the hell down.

I get a little bit of congestion sometimes, but think it is mostly from my retrohale. BTW, my congestion usually leads to post-nasal drip. I used to inhale on purpose, then tried not to, so then it was I accidentally inhaled smaller quantities of smoke. I got it down now. Walking with a pipe takes some practice. If you clench, force the all the smoke out of your mouth before breathing in through your nose.

I unintentionally inhale a little bit, all the time. I try not to do it, which I think sends smoke into my ear canals, because I've had regular ear aches since I've picked up the pipe. That's never been a problem before. It's tough to avoid.
