I think human beings are wired to associate positive thoughts with things that are pleasing to our eye. How many guys fantasize about having sex with a 250 lb woman that is butt ugly? The answer is: Some. Which also proves beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Back when my friends and I were younger, one of my friends used to go after fat older ladies. He said they had more to love. He ended up marrying petit young PhD. Beauty is in the eyes of beholder. I like skinny girls and married one. But I can understand the attraction to fat girls. Not particularly ugly ones.

I do agree with the OP, I enjoy the look of a nice pipe... Now nice and price, don’t always go hand in hand. I’m not a big fan of the look of most Dunhill’s, overrated and think there are FAR nicer pipes for 1/5 the price...

I also enjoy smoking though, so if a cob and some good backy was all I had, it would be a lot better than nothing,..

It's not a coincidence.

I own a Rolex, it loses 3 seconds in 24 hours. My $10 Army Timex keeps better time. Tobacco pipes cake up and burn leaves.

For me personally, it doesn't work that way with pipes and tobacco. The tobacco is the focus for me, not the pipe. I actually think most tobacco tastes better in cobs. I completely understand the attraction of a nice, quality pipe that you may spend hundreds of dollars on. And I do admire the craftsmanship. However, in the end, it's the tobacco for me and the pipe is my tool. I'd rather spend the money on more tobacco than on higher end pipes.

There's a difference. Your friend's priority was to get laid and do so with minimal effort. I respect his strategy as he had a specific need to fulfill and falling in love wasn't part of it.

I have about 92 pipes, mostly mid-price to low-end range, but five or six somewhat up-market pipes too. I try to take a little extra time with the ones I know to be hand made by specific carvers or brands, and that ritual enhances the smoking. This is good because it is a habit that has strayed over to my smoking lower cost pipes that have their own elegance of design and craft. I notice how elegantly shaped is the Dr. Grabow Royalton bulldog. If it were an artisan pipe, it would be striking; indeed, someone at the factory has that special skill and doesn't need to be famous by name to share his or her talent.

100% agree with you. I smoke 1-2 bowls per day and I have 5 pipes that I use. Two Boswells which I bought new for less than 150 bucks, two estate Pete 303's which I paid approx 150 USD's for each one and a MM cob with a custom stem. On very rare occasions I'll smoke one of my other estate Petes. This is why I don't mind spending my money on fine tobaccos ("hard to getters" or discontinued ones) - even if it's from those scalper guys.

BTW, I use the term scalpers in a non-negative way and I support their roles in the market place.

From once owning over 100+ pipes I now have 8. And over 200 pounds of fine tobacco.

I think I’m wired backwards. I have some nicer pipes I’ve yet to smoke, we have some China somewhere but I won’t use it, I had thousands of dollars of guns (that I tragically lost in a canoeing accident) that were never fired, etc.

I like things I’m not afraid to use. I’m hard on stuff so if it’s too fancy, I’m probably going to be more focused on not messing it up than enjoying it.

Oh well.

The most I've paid for a pipe was $100aud [Around $67usd] A 1/4 bent Brebbia Noce Jnr it's a very nice looking pipe and a fine smoker but no better than my MM cobs.

A gifted $350aud full bent Peterson Sherlock Holmes is an excellent pipe [that took a real beating being smoked day in day out for several years before I knew anything about briars - rotation? What's that? ] but really, my MM cobs smoke just as well.

Most of my brand name briars were e-bay bargains. Like the two brand new Lorenzo VIP Plateaux's that I scored for $35 for the pair [Couldn't believe my luck. The snipers were asleep that auction] . Both are fine looking pipes and are good smokers but there's no way I would have paid RRP.

Given the choice between one $200+ pipe or a dozen MM cobs, I'd choose the cobs every time.

And to keep things on track, it was just a cheap Coleman canoe. I could never truly enjoy a nice wooden one for fear of dinging it up on everything.

I have a couple of halfway decent pipes. One of my all time favorites is a somewhat plain Brebbia that I picked up for $2. I don't buy a pipe that doesn't appeal to me so whether it's that $2 Brebbia or one of my "high end" vintage or artisan pipes it's about how satisfying the blend tastes, and nothing else.
