It was very stormy here in carolina for about an hour tonight. My wife called me to the door to look at some black clouds. All of a sudden a tornado just dropped out of one of the clouds. It wasn't close to us and it was moving away.It hit about thirty miles from us.It didn't do very much damage. It was the first one I've ever seen except on tv.My wife was really scared.Of course I pretended to be brave.I don't know if she bought it or not.

Glad you are safe, puffy. I envy you. I have always wanted to see a tornado, though I would never attempt to intentionally. Fortunately here in the Northwest tornadoes are extremely rare.

Puffy...

It's better to be-a see'n one

Than to actually be in one.
That's about as close as you'll ever want to be.

I've seen about at dozen or so... no fun at all.

I'm glad you're safe.

WOW! In all my years of travelling there's 2 things I've never seen, a tornado and snow, not even thick ice.
That would've been it for me, you would've been down at the hardware store buying materials for an underground bunker the very next day! We have little tiny circular winds we call "whirly whirlies", and all they do rustle the leaves on whichever tree they happen to encounter, I guess you'd fall down if caught in the middle of one but we just stand and watch them in wonderment.

I was in a small one in south Texas, sometime in the early to mid '80s. It hit right next to my grandma's house, but luckily it had a short path. It took a full above-ground swimming pool and threw it like a toddler knocking a plate off his high chair and split a 100+ year old Willow that my Great grandmother planted like a wishbone. Once I even had the dubious luxury of seeing one from above (the cyclonic action, it never touched down) as I looked from the top floor of a skyscraper. They are amazing things, but I sure as hell don't desire to be in the middle of that fury.

Here's an old string from that outbreak that Baskerville is talking about.

Thought you might like to revisit a Summer's night in Alabama.

At the 1:18 mark just to the left of the light pole is Bryant Denny Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.

The day those came through Alabama, we had some rough storms here as well, nothing as bad as that, but we did lose part of a tree in the front yard to high winds. If the wind had been blowing a different direction, the tree would have landed on our car.

I'm guessing the one around Lincolnton, Puffy? Or the one outside Shelby? I never seen the funnel, but I got to play in the winds and the rain last night. My customers kept telling me one had touched down outside Shelby around 4:30 EST and that another had touched down around the Lincolnton airport later in the evening. At one point, I was between both storms that rolled through. Its bad when I have to pull over and let the rains die down enough so I continue driving.

We were under a tornado warning yesterday while I was sitting in line waiting to pick up the kids. They locked down the school but didn't invite the parents into the big brick and concrete building! It was scary!

Lived in Illinois for 9 years as a child. Tornadoes are among the more vivid of memories. Msny hourd spent in the basement listening to the old Phillips radio waiting for the all clear.
The Pacific NW is so calm in comparison!

I've seen more than my share here in Iowa and they never fail to fill me with dread.
There is no darker feeling than watching one bear down on all you've worked and saved to build and no higher emotion than realizing it passed you by.
These two emotions can all happen within a 15-20 minute time span and usually leave me exhausted. :|

I've lived in Oklahoma and Alabama. In deed I have seen a couple of tornadoes. Living on the west coast of Canada such things are super rare. I don't miss the twisters but I do miss the thunderstorms that spawn the twisters.
