Fun fact:

Star Wars was considered a minor league, distant-second-choice by Hollywood actors the year it was made. One that they merely settled for. The hot title movie they wanted to be in that summer was Smokey and the Bandit 2.


Fun fact #2:

Lucas traded (in effect) most of his director's salary for Star Wars for the movie's merchandising rights. $350K for several billion dollars, as it turned out.

I knew the 2nd fact but not the first.

I remember hitting whole rolls with rocks and hammers.

I remember McDonalds having ashtrays and cocaine coffee spoons, schools teaching civics, and speaking of schools, I vividly remember the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary and their treatment of we who acted up:

Not when I was in high school.
But my boarding school was in a rural area, so hundreds of acres to get lost in. And providing you don't set fire accidentally to the bush, your chances of getting caught was zip !

By the time my younger brother started in the same school, they had put put in a smoking room for the senior students

I know guys who had a smoking room in their school. That really seems crazy to me. We had “the smoke doors”. We were allowed to smoke outside one of the side entrances to the school.

A gallon of gasoline was12 cents.

A movie ticket at a first run theater cost 2 to 3 dollars.

Now the whole train carriage or bus gets to hear of last night's doings with the boyfriend whether you wish to or not.

I went to Catholic school and our principal had a good sized leather paddle strop that we students ccalled “the strap”. If you really messed up you’d have to hold out your hands to receive a few lashes.

They surly are not there anymore.
I went into a library last month. The first time in about 20 years. There was only 1 set of old encyclopedia books sitting there merely for decorative purposes.

I remember when my mom bought us a set of encyclopedias at the grocery store. Each week when she did the shopping she came home with a new volume. I was always worried they might run out and we’d be left with an incomplete set.
