I received some pipes from my grandfather when he passed away and I know nothing about them. I would like info on them and how to clean, store and maybe value also. I do not want to sell these I would like to keep them in the
Welcome to the form! Those are some nice pipes from what I can tell. Here are some links to check out that may help: http://pipedia.org/ http://pipepages.com/ http://www.pipephil.eu/
My guess is the Kaywoodie is form the mid to late 1950s due to the clover leaf design. Can't really help you with the others, possibly someone here on the forum can help.
Howdy.
I know nothing about prices.
Pic #4 and #10 looks like a Carey stem.
Pics #7-9 look like a Butz Choquin.
The rest you can see their makers mark clearly. I've got a mystery pipe from my grandfather as well. Never been able to track down the maker.
Koshcna:
Lovely selection of pipes and I'm very partial to the Jost. Does it have a "Made in England" stamp anywhere on the wood?
The Jost tobacco store was located in St. Louis, MO and their pipes were either handmade or they purchased blanks from the Comoy pipe manufacturers in the UK. (Across the state in Kansas City the legendary Fred Diebel did something similar buying his blanks from the GBD company.)
I have three Jost pipes - one of which is a Comoy - and all three are great smokers. They're more prized in the Midwest and they usually sell on eBay in the 15 to 25 dollar range. The leather wrapped pipes were very popular in the 50's and 60's and most manufacturers would take blemished briar and wrap them in pigskin to move unsightly inventory and take advantage of the fad. I've seen a few where the leather had worn off and they're not very attactive.
There are numerous posts on this forum concerning the cleaning & polishing of pipes. If you're interested in restoring them to an almost new appearance send me a PM and I'll share my methods with you.
I still have a couple of my grandfather's pipes and I do treasure them.
Fnord
Hi and thanks for all the help so far and no Fnord the Jost says "france" on it not England and we live in Saint Louis Mo love the conection to city, pipe and our family!! great story to have with the pipe to pass on! I dont know if I should clean the pipes if it is better for keeping them then that would be what I want to do I am not a smoker so the restoring would be just for safe keeping
I bought my Jost's pipes new at their downtown St. Louis shop in 1982.
I believe that they closed their original shop and moved to a downtown location sometime in the '70s. I am not sure when they closed the downtown shop.
