I was in Boston for a conference, and I stole a minute to run down to the Boston Commons to visit the legend! I got there just minutes before they closed. That is not a big store. There were three or four people in there grabbing essentials, and it was full. But the store was cool!
I've never had any of their blends and didn't know where to start with their offerings. I always hoped that if I ever made the pilgrimage to Peretti, I'd have a minute to hang out and sample. However, I had just a minute to talk to the owner Steve about English. And of course, I was in need of a fine smoking instrument.
I didn't get any pictures inside the store. I was taking it in and trying to frantically guess what blend(s) I would walk out with. However, when I got Steve's attention, my first order of business was to feed the PAD monster. I told him I was interested in a Park Square made by Peterson, and he walked over to his case and handed me a straight billiard that he thought had the best grain. I agreed.
I didn't have time to explore their various English blends. But I decided I'd break in the new pipe with Century, a blend that Peretti made to celebrate their centennial. Steve said he smoked it almost exclusively for 20 years, and they've been blending it since their centennial... 55 years ago! It's gotta be good enough for an ounce. Steve dropped a brass ounce on one side of his 100-year-old(?) scale, and balanced a very generous ounce on the tobacco side for me. My assignment is to go through the ounce and call back to discuss my next order.
Who here has made the trip? What's your favorite Peretti blend? If you're in Boston, and even if you only have 10 minutes, go check it out! It's like buying pipe tobacco from a museum.
