After a process not dissimilar to a confirmation hearing for a Supreme Court Judge, I've come to a final conclusion.
I was gonna get started............then "shut up weez.... :D

I don't single out components when smoking and enjoy the overall flavor of the composition. My blend specific pipes are to not corrupt the singular flavor of my favorite blends, and my genre specific pipes are so to prevent other components from interfering with what I want to taste. In blends with more than a whisper of latakia, the singular taste of the blend as a whole is lost to me and all I taste is latakia.

Bassbug, I know you smoke Petersons, so I'm not even sure you actually smoke pipes. According to internet lore, Petersons aren't drilled properly and the stain covers the pipe from bore to bit. I think you're trolling us.

The most logical conclusion I could discern from the OP is that you need duplicate pipes of every shape for every blend, and since we all know there are infinite blends, and infinite pipe shapes, logically everyone should have Infinity x Infinity pipes.

ashdigger, I see you're trying to get me into full curmudgeon mode, which is pretty easy to do :)
Although I do own non Peterson pipes, I readily admit my weakness for the Petes. Its the aesthetics and I love the P-lip system.
Strangely enough, the only pipe I own that needed a bit of pipe mud to bring the bottom of the bowl level with the draft hole is a non Pete. An Italian made Lorenzetti.
As far as the stain issue, it's definitely a real thing. I don't understand why they have such a poor method of staining, but a good scrubbing with some whiskey takes care of that and has the added bonus of dulling down the finish, which I prefer...don't get me going on the hideousness of shiny pipes

I think we can overthink simple things sometimes. I got lazy and found a pipe I like to smoke more than my others and started throwing whatever blend I wanted to smoke at the time into it. Sometimes I pick up on the taste of the previous blend, sometimes not. It has never been off putting though and most of the time makes the bowl a little more interesting.

Btw, bass, I was just greenin' you on that lat rat. :) I knew you didn't like it. But how often do you see me ignore a straight line, especially on a snow day?? :)

Part of dedicating is also habit dependent. If you constantly cycle through tobacco types, dedicating may not matter as you may not ghost a pipe that way. If you tend to smoke the same types for a long period, you are running a higher risk and dedication may be for you. I don't think it is overthinking or even some grand scheme to get us to buy more pipes, I think it depends on your personal preference. I definitely have pipes dedicated to certain types of blends, and I have some pipes that I just smoke when I want to. I have some pipes dedicated to a blend specifically, but that is more to keep the blend and pipe together in my mind, and a good tobacco from only one pipe really can be a nice moment of relaxation.

As a fairly new and infrequent piper, so far I've been trying a lot of different tobaccos, and have just started to narrow down what may be my "regulars" going forward.
I've very consistent with cleaning my pipes, but I haven't bothered dedicating any to specific blends, and at least as of now, I don't plan to.
And as long as they're clean, I don't think I would mind a little ghosting--there's something Zen-like about maintaining some connection between the totally unique succession of tobaccos that I happened to smoke in that pipe at that time for whatever reason...
(And less Zen-like is the fact that my palette isn't really developed enough to notice much of a difference.)

Oh sorry--that should be "palate" not "palette."
Man, you make fun of dimwits on the internet who can't spell, and before you know it you're one of them.
