I Gave Cob Staining a Whirl

Finally learned not to put so much on it soaks through. Would love to learn how to add a bamboo shank to these things.

What stain did you use ?

It's lincolns leather dye. I used black, buffed it with Tripoli then used medium brown and buffed it again.

I am getting some bamboo from chiefwannapuff, a member here. I hope to try the stuff on cobs and some estate pipes I want to modify. Maybe he can help. Hope this is OK.

I have a bamboo shanked MM cob that I posted on the forum a year or so ago. Someone told me they were made in the 1940 - 50's.

Here is my bamboo shanked MM cob allegedly dating from the 1940's - 1950's. I have no idea what 'name' it has but is rather an interesting shape. It has a hardwood plug in the bottom by the way.

I had to top the bowl as it was looking pretty skanky but otherwise the pipe is in great shape for its alleged age.

I've been smoking cobs for about 60 years and just recently got interested in briars and meers. If you've never smoked a cob, you have been missing out on possibly the best smokes of your life. I have an army of them with the oldest nearly 20yo. Still looks and smokes great. I try to keep them up so they look good. The only reamer they've ever seen is my pen knife. Many pipe cleaners and cotton swabs.
