I've dropped my meerschaum pipe. Twice. In the same day. It's the first time in a decade or so of pipe smoking that I've ever dropped a pipe, so I suppose I had to try it another time just to see how it felt.

The first time I stood back and surveyed the scene of the accident like a crime scene investigator, looking for pieces before disturbing the ground. Just an indent from the pavement, a millimetre deep. The second time, I snatched it up with lightning speed, as if it was not going to be damaged if I picked it up quickly enough.

There was an impression on each side of the pipe, but not being into rusticated meerschaum, I went to work on it with steel wool and smoothed it out. It's a little foggy now, and doesn't have that glass like shine. Anyone have any methods for final polishing? It would be extra good if the method didn't include special sandpaper or mesh. It's possible to find this where I live, maybe, but ridiculously difficult. A home made remedy would be really interesting to learn as I'm guessing there will be future nicks to buff out.

I noticed Storient is getting raked over the coals here, and I'm pretty much indifferent as my experience wasn't anything to write home about either. I have to say though, I'm impressed with the durability of this thing that came from them. I thought for sure it was done for. Both times, in the same day. Just a surface mark as far as I can tell!

So, if you've dropped your meerschaum, how has it fared? Maybe these things aren't so fragile after all. Two good whacks from about a metre height should have done it, but it's still going.

I suppose as painful as these incidents are to bear, they are part of the character of the pipe. Somehow I don't feel the same way about my door ding on my Mustang (1st one since 2007).

I feel your pain, Z! The first day I got my new Ford F150, I drove it back to work and someone was in my parking stall. I parked in the parking lot and went in to tell the guy to move his car and when I came out to put my truck in my spot, some doofus had door dinged my 20 minute old truck majorly on the driver's door. At the time, I thought I might go ballistic but no one was there to go off on and I would have just had a stroke instead. Oh well, stuff happens. As long as the pipe still smokes, the truck still drives, its all good. See how mellow I've gotten in my old age? Pipe smoking helps, I think. :puffy:

I just ordered my first Meer. I've had a clay before it seemed to survive alright; so I figured it was time to pony up some cash for one and see what the fuss is about...

Luckily, I've never dropped any of my pipes, but was helping my son get a mower off the trailer and

one of the ramps slipped. I was jerked down toward the hood with a meerschaum clinched in my teeth.

The pipe hit the edge of the hood and my teeth hurt for a couple days. My pipe ended up with a good

scratch in front.

I've never sanded a meerschaum and wouldn't try.... I'll leave it for "the character of the pipe" as

zonomo says....

You really do need micro-mesh sandpaper if you want to get that pipe looking right, now any autobody shop has it, Autozone you name it. I recomend 3,000 grit for the final finish, it will shine like glass. I am sure your area has car shops :)
It is hard to believe you can drop it on concrete and it is alright, that's some angel on your shoulder buddy.
