I used boiling water. I poured some into a shallow bowl and dipped the tenon in there for just a few seconds, this softened it up a bit, then i took the back end of my wife's crochet needle, and slowly pushed it into the stem. Now the wife has a full set of needles so i was able to start out with a smaller one and worked my way up to what i needed. I only moved up one needle but you get the idea. You pull the needle back and and dry off and insert back into shank.
There was another method or two i saw online however this was the only one i was comfortable trying out. Its been smoked quiet a bit since then and its still has a very snug fit.
