My understanding, derived largely from the writings of GL Pease, is that that amount of nicotine absorbed from pipe tobacco has far more to do with the PH (relative acidity) of the tobacco and of your mouth than it does with the amount of nicotine actually present in the leaf. Hence, altering the PH balance in your mouth might affect how much nicotine you are absorbing. Alternately, you could swig some Coke or something. This is all theoretical, though. I stopped having that problem once I discovered the blends that can give me a Vitamin N fix and have stopped giving much thought to it.
