I once burned out my taste buds by smoking too hot. I was on a kick with the Walnut and Revelation Matches and suddenly everything I smoked tasted like ammonia. Had to take a couple weeks off to start tasting tobacco again, and even after that it was a gradual return. Not sure if a good tongue scraping (with a spoon) would help, but it might be worth a try.

how many different pipes do you smoke? It might trick your brain to switch up the pipes sometimes. If you have one or two pipes there is no trigger that what's coming out of this pipe isn't the same thing as last 20 times. That's another possible fix is to make sure you rotate implements

Well I have about 5 pipes in my rotation currently. I own over 50 but barely smoke most of them. I mainly smoke my weber royal bands, my Kaywoodies and my dragon briar billiard and a couple of dunhills and a Sav 320.

I must confess I have been consuming alcohol to access on a fairly regular basis. By that I mean pretty much every day. I have read that this can do a number on your tastebuds, especially when you drink and smoke. I have also used some other substances recently that may have affected my olfactory senses. Perhaps I just need a break.

Loss of taste and smell (which is much of taste) can be symptomatic, so monitor the situation. Bring it up with your primary care person if you can comfortably do that. If it were me, I'd go into denial ( just kidding). You might go on a pipe break and come back and see if taste has returned.

Be careful, dude. I was on a similar train and had a heart attack at 37. Also had genetic cholesterol issues that were the base of the problem, but everything else certainly didn't help.

A break can work wonders, for both taste, and overall health.

Hate to be that guy, but don't hesitate to reach out to someone if you're drinking a bunch every night. During law school I drank heavily every night because it actually helped keep my butt in the chair while studying. I learned later that it was actually issues with anxiety, but I kept drinking the same amount after graduating and starting to work. It didn't seem excessive at all, and I never had a hangover or anything, so it was hard to convince myself that I needed to cut it back. I reached out to a counselor in private, and it was super helpful for setting boundaries. I still drink, but only one pour of whiskey during the week, and two per night on the weekends. I don't think I have the alcoholic "tendency" because I don't ever have the "need a drink" impulse. The problem was that I had built a habit of drinking too much every night, and breaking the habit set me right.

We all have our own theories of how this happened. Here's mine: maybe this is analogous to an athlete's slump. Everything is going fine and suddenly you can't control your pitches, or your swing. So what do you do—apart from letting time pass and hoping the slump ends? You go back to fundamentals. Maybe you have to go back to the pipe fundamentals—packing, cadence, etc. As a seasoned pipe veteran these activities have become so second-nature to you that you might not even know they've gotten a bit sloppy. If that's not the case and you're doing everything right, you might just have to hang in there until the slump passes.

Well seems as though things are getting back to normal. Smoked some And So to Bed on the way to work this morning and it tasted delicious. I think i'll try to stick to beer during lent and stay away from the whiskey every night. I am also not using snuff anymore, since it has a number of uncomfortable side effects and isn't worth it in my opinion. Thanks for the comments kings.
