I once heard an NPR broadcast from the Syrian city of Latakia with Terry Gross and a native speaker from that city. Had nothing to do with tobacco as I recall (?) but the citizens of the city say it La-TOCK-ee-uh. It seems the tobacco is pretty universally pronounced Laah-ta-Kee-UH.

Funny old world, ain’t it??

I also, just now realized that I have never actually pronounced the words Dr Grabow aloud, to anyone, because no one in my life cares about pipes enough for me to actually say the name of a pipe company aloud. It’s been in my head, that I’ve said it wrong, all this time. I never even said graBAW or GRAYbo aloud, ever.

Holy shit.

I recently read something, probably on Facebook, that said we should think twice before judging people for mispronouncing words. If they're mispronouncing it, it's probably because they've only read that word before and never heard anyone say it so we should think well of the fact that at least they are reading and exposing themselves to new words and new ideas. That actually changed my behavior.

Did a quick Google search. Literally found 3 different pronunciations. I say Luh-TAHkia (same as the Google pronunciation) because one of the guys on 90 Day Fiance was from that city, so I figured he said it right. I assume the tobacco is named after the city?

Maybe we’re just Anglocising the pronunciation? Maybe it’s an Italian vs Jersey Italian thing (Capicola vs Gabagool). Eh, I like the way I say it. Everything else hurst my ears.
