Whoa. Sooner or later, everyone has to learn that real evil exists, but we want to delay that as much as possible for our little ones. Keep on keeping on with her and consider a child psychologist who specializes in trauma if available. Very sorry this is our world.

I'll for sure hug my little ones an extra time. A few years back a very young child friend shared with me that his brother had died by suicide. In our conversation I suggested that this was likely from depression that wasn't successfully treated. I also admitted that I really didn't know. In this case I'd be surprised if the murderer didn't have some mental health or substance abuse problem. Healthy people don't do that. In your shoes I may coach it in a similar way. There was a very sick person who committed this terrible act. It's not normal and it's not right or fair. It certainly wasn't the fault of your daughter's friend. Take care of your daughter and family but remember to also take care of yourself.

I just spent the evening explaining to my NINE year old daughter why someone would want to murder one of her best friends (10 years old), her friend’s little brother (7 - also a twin, the other one survived), and their mother. The suspect, who is in custody, also allegedly killed another one of their relatives some thirty minutes prior.

I’m talking about going to each other’s birthday parties, friendship bracelets, all the same classes at school, drawing pictures of each other, the works.

It has been an EXCEEDINGLY difficult evening here. Secret Santa came at the right time. Gonna auger in tomorrow and get a box together to take my mind off of this for a bit...
