Could someone help a new guy understand why everyone is so excited by HU? Is better tobacco/blends than everything else?
They are quality blends, created by Hans Biederman, one of the best blenders working today. A lot of the leaf used is “Empire” leaf from Africa, as well as leaf from India and South America, with more depth and body to it. Until recently you had to buy it from Esterval’s in Germany.
I wouldn’t say that it’s better, just that it’s a different experience from C&D or Sutliff.
“Better” is what an individual prefers.

I do believe the appeal is exactly as others have said: the inability to easily get HU in the USA prior to now. This fact is combined with the high ratings from the (relatively few) reviews, most of which have been done by Europeans who themselves don’t have easy access to the great artisan blends made stateside, so these have been considered some of the better blends they’ve had.

I do wonder if the overall ratings will drop now that there is a whole new market of smokers to give their opinions. (Actually, I kind of expect that to happen, as we will be comparing them to our stateside favorites.)

most of which have been done by Europeans
and most of which have been done with the initial version of the blends quite sometime ago. Some recipes have changed over time, and some blends are now manufactured in a different place (and threfore probably slighty different) after the end of the HU-Dan collaboration.
