I may have a tiny wee little bit of TAD and PAD going on!
Mostly though it's just on account of trying to figure out what styles of pipes and tobacco I like best. After 25 years of smoking cigarettes I feel like it's time to give my lungs a rest and would like to transition to pipe smoking instead, so I've been trying a bit of everything to see what suits my palate.
I'm currently sitting back transferring the tins of tobacco that arrived today into 8 oz Ball canning jars, and based on the sniff test alone I already have a feeling that I'm really going to like most of the VaPers I picked up! I've found that most pipe tobaccos seem to hit my rather unrefined palate quite a bit differently than they're described by reviewers online. Here's what my nose says about the blends that arrived today:
Escudo Navy Deluxe - Grape juice! It smells exactly like the grape juice my grandmother used to serve with pancakes for breakfast, and I like it!
Peterson Elizabethan Mixture - Toasted whole grain bread, for sure. It's a lovely aroma and probably the first tobacco I'm going to smoke from this order.
Peter Stokkebye Luxary Navy Flake - Are you sure this isn't jasmine green tea? Because it smells exactly like jasmine green tea, and I dig it.
Orlik Golden Sliced - Grape juice and... dandelions? There's something decidedly floral about the aroma of this one, and I'm pretty sure it's dandelions. Not entirely confident that I'm going to enjoy smoking this, but I'll give it a try!
Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired - Badly burnt wood of some kind, maybe with a little burnt plastic in there somewhere. There's a bit of an acrid sourness to the smokey smell that's a little off putting. Maybe it tastes better than it smells?
Gawith Hoggarth Ennerdale - If you've ever had Gang Kha, a Thai coconut milk soup with straw mushrooms, lemongrass, galangal, and Kaffir lime leaves, that's what this smells like to me. My housemate strongly disagreed though and ran away when I tried to get him to smell it a second time. Could be great, could be horrifying. Will smoke with some trepidation.
Sutliff Pumpkin Spice - Lots of alcohol based vanilla extract with a bit of pumpkin pie spice in the background. I think I'll enjoy it when the weather gets cooler!
Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening - Alright, who dumped floor cleaner in the maple syrup? The maple part smells good, but the chemical odor is pretty alarming. I don't think I'm going to care for this one, but I've never liked any of the Cornell & Diehl blends I've tried so it wouldn't be a first. Still having night terrors about Haunted Horse Barn and Old Barnyard Krantz.
CAO Eileen's Dream - Generic non-descript sweetened Cavendish tobacco aroma. Reminds me a lot of some random Lane blend. I hope it tastes more exciting than it smells.
There ya go, my initial impressions of all the blends that arrived today! I'm really looking forward to trying Escudo, Elizabethan Mixture, Peter Stokkebye Luxary Navy Flake, and Sutliff Pumpkin Spice; but the rest will be approached with varying degrees of apprehension
